Very true, and you illustrate my point. Cocaine is a nasty drug; people I've known that used it for any sustained periods at all turned into utterly selfish money grubbing assholes (which makes me suspect that people running the MNCs are cocaine addicts).

But after listening to the government's utter bullshit about marijuana and discovering that it is in fact utter bullshit, does NOT fuck your life up, does NOT do anything the government says it does, Joe Kidd is likely to try crack or heroin, which ARE very nasty drugs indeed. The government's anti-drug lies are counterproductive.

Why is tobacco legal? None of its addicts survive; it is the deadliest of all drugs, and may be as addictive as any. Noccotine is one of the deadliest poisons of the planet; it's used in insecticides. All of the stated reasons for drugs being outlawed apply ito tobacco, and in spades. Either outlaw tobacco or legalize all the other drugs (except antibiotics).

I had to look up SIM lock.

A SIM lock, Simlock or Network lock, not to be confused with PIN or PUK code, is a capability built-in to GSM phones by mobile phone manufacturers. Network providers use this capability to restrict the use of these phones to specific countries and network providers. Currently, phones can be locked to accept only SIM cards from one or more of the following:
    • Countries (the phone will work in one country, but not another)
    • Network/Service providers (e.g. AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile, Vodafone, etc.)
    • SIM types (i.e. only specific SIM cards can be used with the phone).
In some countries, most mobile phones are shipped with country and/or network provider locks. In addition, these locked phones tend to have firmware installed on them which is specific to the network provider. For example, if you have a Vodafone or Telstra branded phone in Australia, it displays the relevant logo and may only support features provided by that network (i.e. Vodafone Live!). This firmware is installed by the service provider and is separate from the locking mechanism. You can unlock most mobile phones to work with any GSM, such as O2 or Orange (in the UK) but the phone may still display the original branding and may not support features of your new carrier. Most phones can be unbranded by uploading a different firmware version, a procedure recommended for advanced users only.
This is the main reason I love slashdot - it exposes me to new ideas and technologies. If I run across something unfamiliar, wikipedia almost alwasys comes to the rescue.

As to SIM locks and DRM, WTF? These are EVIL with a capital E and capital V, I, and L. They are the antithesis of OSS.

"Look" Satan said to me, I know that concepts like murder, adultery, and theift 'go against the Christian philosophy,' but they are necessary components of the current industry. Why do we need locked cages? We do," Satan continues. "Some of these things harm the industry but they're here [as things stand]. These are touchy, emotional issues, but this dialogue is very much needed. As an industry, we plan to use Christian technologies, but we are not yet ready to play by the rules; but this needs to work the other way round too."

I have three words for Jaaksi and his father Satan: "Fuck off, asshole."

We have two "real" third parties, the Green Party (I don't think they have a clear nominee yet) and the Libertarian Party. Unfortunately, this election the Libbies are running a Republican as their candidate.

The only reason they aren't considered "real" parties is that Corporate Media, run by the corporations who bribe both wings of the Republicrat Corporate party, don't want you to think of them as real or viable. If I give a ten thoudand dollar "campaign contribution" to the Republican wing of the party and another ten thousand dollars (chump change to a corporation) to the Democrat wing, it doesn't matter which candidate loses, I win. My only problem is if neither Republicrat candidate wins, so I'm not very damned likely to cover a Green or Libertarian.

This was especially telling in the 2000 elections. That was the year I decided to no longer vote for Republicrats.

In that race, the Grean Party cast Ralph Nader as its candidate. Nader got lots of mainstream corporate press, some would say in spite of (I now say because of) the fact that mathematically he had no chance of winning whatever; he wasn't on the ballot in enough states.

The Libertarians were on the ballot in 49 states, yet their candidate got nary a peep from the Corporate Media.

Union Carbide murdered more Indians than Osama murdered Americans. Jack-In-The-Box killed dozens of children with poison hamburgers. Sony put a trojan rootkit on music CDs that my daughter infected my computer with. Ford killed its customers for a ten dollar profit per Pinto. The list goes on - corporations are by their nature evil. If it comes to a choice between losing profits and killing people, the corporate CEO will gladly and willingly kill people. And corporate media is pro-corporation.

If you think we only have two real parties, you have been brainwashed by your corporate overlords.
