Ordinary domesticated rats have been trained to go through stud walling and tortuously complex runs following their owners' tapping on the outer plasterboard and pulling with them a trace string which is then used to pull in a UTP / Telephone/Mains/antenna/ wtf cable. simplifies a complex expensive and time consuming process.

Flash up a spreadsheet/wordprocessor, flick between select all and select none, to make the screen flash black/white. If the power supply regulation is good then bumping up and down the beam current in this way wont cause the vertical size of the raster to change by more than about a mm, if the raster stretches by more than +- 3->5mm, pick another monitor.

I too used a plain wafer switch, but had to run diodes across the +5V lines to the keyboard, so that the kbd in use always got power, 2 years now and no problems
