  1. Re:Jumping to conclusions on Duke Wireless Problem Caused by Cisco, not iPhone · · Score: 1

The problem is that Duke has become this adopted child by the media. The media seems to dig for stories to report about Duke. Duke, of course, loves the attention, because it's a free way of advertising (even if it might be in a negative story, it gets their name out to more people).

I'm not acting like they must belong to undergrads, but I am acting like the number of undergrads in a school directly influences the overall size of the population of that school, and Duke is one of the smaller schools in the country. There are simply not anywhere near as many people on that campus as there are at other campuses (i.e. Michigan), yet because it's a school that for some reason is always front and center in the media's eyes, this is the school that's reported.

12,000 students? Sure, if you count every grad student there is, regardless of how often they are on campus/using any wireless network. Duke has maybe 6,000 undergrads, and a much smaller student base than probably 75% of Division 1 schools across the country, and yet every other school seems to be doing fine with iPhones (such as the heaven 9 miles away at UNC)...

But in college, that percentage is much higher. I'm at UNC, and I can honestly say that I have met 5 people at the most in my college career (I'm a junior now) who do not use the Facebook. It's generally expected...you're in college, you use the Facebook. Even if people don't regularly use it, it's a great tool for contacting new friends, especially new classmates.

A good point, but for many people, downloading music from an artist is used to see if they like that artist. If they do, they'll go buy an album or find a nearby concert sometime. So for many people, downloading is a necessary step that ultimately leads to a purchase.

As a student at UNC, I completely agree. Laptops help me take notes in class, especially in a lecture class where it is important to get down all the important pieces without missing anything.
