While I can understand the comments suggesting that using tax payers money for such an investigation is not worthwhile, I am totally flabergasted by the defensive posture adopted by so many. So many low-brow insults were tossed about, it made me feel sad. Discounting something as "obviously ludicrus", is fools talk. In science nothing is obvious, always be suspicious of any statement containing the word obvious. So many theories we now take for granted (and apply to modern industry) were once laughed at by the scientific establishment. Keep an open mind.
I feel it very strange that people would suggest that because we have not discovered a phenomenon, or a mechanism to explain some phenomenon, then it does not exist. Using the course of logic, we have literally invented the world from scratch. Some people actually hold this to be true, but at least they have an internally coherent web of reasons.
Also to note, some of the most balanced and insightful comments were moderated really low, so go through them if you want another dimension of the conversation.
Thank you for your dose of good sense, I usually hate reading these kind of stories nevermind participating in the discussion, because of the mindless folk who have to defend an entrenched position.
I could go on and on, but you said it so well, I don't have to.
DO you like what happened to our school system while the teachers were fighting? Do you think it is wise to completely ignore the crumbling of our education system, while we demonize the union?
Regardless of your personal politics, it is a fact that nearly every major advance in workers rights has come from unions excerising their might. If you abolish the teachers union, per your suggestion, we will be left with an impotent mouse standing against the giant behemoth of government/business. How well do you think that would stack up for the public.
Once again: Almost ALL gains in worker rights have come from unions. Do you enjoy your eight hour workday? Thank the unions. Do you enjoy worker safety legislation which requires your employer to train you and keep you safe? Thank the unions. Do you enjoy sick leave, maternity leave, vacation time? Unions.
So what is your suggestion to the teachers. Don't strike? Just let everything go down the crapper? What... please give a concrete answer as to what they should do when, say... Mike Harris closed hundreds of schools, upping the class size all over the province? Is that A-OK when class size goes up from an already high 28-30, to a whopping 33-36? How about when preparation time was cut in half? Or when Harris suggested that we fill the shortage of teachers with UNTRAINED teacher-helpers, whom we can pay less?
Yeah, your right, the teachers union is just a big baby and all those problems are insignificant. DONT BLAME THE UNION, it is like killing the messenger of bad news. The school system is being torn apart whether you notice or not. The reason that the union is villified is because they are MAKING YOU NOTICE.
Anyone think Greenhouse Gases are a good idea? Anyone think that we are INCAPABLE of rapidly changing energy sources without total economic devestation? (IMHO I think it would be a major boon for the economy).
All this talk about whether ONE of MANY effects of pollution is or is not in fact real is just a smoke screen, which distracts our attention from the fact that, OMG, POLLUTION IS BAD!!
Is there anyone who thinks that we can continue emiting greenhouse gases along with horrible toxins for the next several decades, without major consequences?
If so, please go for a walk in downtown Mexico city...
The directors cut is the only thing worth watching. Someone mentioned that it looks awkward because the film was made for dubbing... baloney, Scott was furious when the studio MADE him dub it because it was too complex for americana to understand. While somewhat slow, the movie is so stunningly beautiful that your eyes can just wander on screen in delight.
Also, the most 'accurate' looking portrayed future I have yet seen on film. That is, 25 years after the film has been released, many parts still look plausible.
Once again, spare yourself from watching the theatrical version, it sucks compared to the directors cut.
NOOOOO!!!
Have you ever wanted to go camping for a month and program at the same time? The crank is THE thing which does it for me. I have a portable solar panel, and a dynamo generator on my bike. If I were to combine the three power sources, and use the book for text editing, only occasionally compiling, I have calculated that I could get about 5.5 hours of laptop usage per travelling day for free, with no additional power source! Once I get my hands on one of these, I will live like a wild animal in the woods all summer long, biking from hippy festival to hippy festival. When the season ends, I will come back to society having produced valuable code. PLEASE SOMEONE PRODUCE A DISKLESS LAPTOP WITH A FULL SIZE KEYBOARD AND 20+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE AND I WILL PAY YOU $10,000. Even if it has 33mhz CPU and 8mb RAM.
