Its interesting that the team that built SpaceShipOne spent between $20m and $30m developing a craft that is aimed to win a $10m Prize. In my view they are not a private venture and should be disallowed, after all, as written on the side of the craft itself is Paul Allen project. Given that he is one of the wealthiest people on the planet it rather negates the original aims of the project. Now, it is an amazing feat that deserves to be lauded but I think it is a case of he who has the most cash wins and the prize itself wasn't worthy of the merit. Another case of money triumphs over ingenuity.
Oh Yes. Open Source software. open source software wakes me out of bed every morning, Not only that it has my breakfast ready for me, my car already running and warmed up. It will guarentee me that i'll get to work without any traffic delays. and that I wont have any single problems and a trouble free day. Could you imagine if they had been running open source software or some miserable underdeveloped piece of software(which incidentally they are). Imagine the procedure. rpm -i newairtrafficsoftware.rpm error software package xxx requires package yyy rpm -i packageyyy error packageyyy.1.1.1 conflicts with packageyyy1.0.0. Apt would require you to upgrade the entire system although then you would have some measure of success. It might actually work. Yep open source is the way to go. If you read the entire article it seems that the software they were using undewent several different ownerships and development cycles. Could yo imagine an open source software doing the job? Hundreds of different individuals working to different goals and no coordination. It defies logic that someone can even make a statement like that.
Only recently i was pondering this. I was trying to remember the names of some of the servers i was an admin for. Although i'm based in Ireland one company had for example COR01a as a server name namely it was the first Banyan Vines server in our location, This got tricky as we ended up with about 20 Banyan servers. My most recent multi national employer originally US in origin and now wholly owned by a Danish company used a naming convention similar to your first example. For example SCOK01DB2 would stand for as follows: S = Server COK = Cork DB = Database 2 = Second Server in database farm.
It did get a bit awkward if you came across the likes of SDUBDB2 as if your Irish you might think its in Dublin but since we had no servers in Dublin it had to be Dubai!!
I used to be a novell fan, in fact I used to swear by it, but if someone drops the marketing game, and succumbs to the microsoft one then I think novell has no future. It has gotten to the state that novell can no longer compete with M$, So as much as I want to believe & understand and obey what they say, It will be along a lot longer before they will conform, Novell 6 I dont think so. Another company that have outdone them selves by licensing.
In all fairness, ransom is the word in question here. Personally I reckon CD universe should be boycotted and driven off the net, and little bas*ards like Maxis too. I would almost lay bets that if they did pay the ransom, the numbers would still be made public anyway.

As The Register would put it is this a sign of going titsup.com? What future does this spell for the OSDN and Slashdot for that matter?
