Killjoy, I had a similar experience. Black out, apparently some extreme violence against the bullies, then I come to afraid of what I see I've done. I had the same results too. It scared me, I didn't know I had that kind of anger within myself, and it scares me to think I could go there again. But, one bully became a great friend, others let me be, and the jocks that happened to witness the incident kept a respectful distance from me. Just interesting to me to see such a similar story.
This is exactly how I ended up liking open source. I've always worked for small companies, which means that the vendors really don't care about me. I got the run-around every time, and ended up having to find a solution myself. It's hard to fix software that isn't opensource, so here I am.
Let me take that one farther...

My suggestion is this: don't buy software from any UCITA-state company, or any national company whose licensing says you are bound by the laws of a UCITA-state. There's simply no reason to take risks like that.
Let me take that one farther. Don't _buy_ software. Support and use open source projects.

Well, in my case, I have to support many WINXX only apps, but I want to run a better os.... I could, and currently are trying, to put WINE to good use in running these apps untill a) they are ported to Linux, b) there is an opensource alternative that can replace the current app , for example VNC replaced pcAnywhere for me. Of course I'd rather run a native app, but believe it or not, there are developers out there that don't know what Linux is. (Poor, lost souls...)

I very strongly second that! I'd like to go to writing a mod for Mozilla, but I'm not up to that skill level yet.
Isn't programming a small first step to transferring our brain into a computer. We think through a problem, then transcribe our thought process into machine code. It's just a small piece of our brain, but one piece at a time adds up after a while.
Wouldn't it be the open source thing to do to create this solution internally, and submit it to the open source community for evaluation and comment. Your company would be best served by an internal workforce over a contracted outside company. Internally developed and maintained projects usually have a better turn around time, and the product is usually aimed at the needs of the company more specificaly. Here is a need... invent someting.
Well, the reason I have been given by many end-users is reliabality. Most business systems have a tendency to loose important info every once and a while. I am currently looking into a problem like this. The data seems to have several ways to get lost. Other users changing it, the transaction never really went through, good old data corruption, lack of portabality of a PC, etc. Several people here have palm devices, but those do not interface with the legacy system. I hope one day that there are true paperless offices, but we, the S.A.s must provide complete seemless and accountable systems to provide the end user with the sence of reliabality that they had with paper systems. As of yet, I have not seen a system like this in operation.

Hmm.. Well I plan to vacation to Mars in about 15 to 150 years. I'll swing by and pick that stuff up for NASA. It would make a great collectors item.
