  1. As Mark Twain once said on Google's Share of Searches Falling? Or Increasing? · · Score: 5, Interesting

There are lies, damn lies and statistics. Personally I can't remember the last time I used something other than Google for a search and what other search engine has had it's name verbed in common usage? Even back in the day when AltaVista was the search engine of choice I never heard anyone say "AltaVista it".

  2. doh! missed it on Web Hosting - Roll Your Own vs Hosting Company? · · Score: 1

well i missed my question going up, call me dumbass.

anyway if anyone is still interested the specifics of my setup are this: i have a 384 SDSL connection (fastest i can get to my house) with static IPs and servers are explicitly permitted in my contract. the site would definitely be on *nix, either linux or freebsd, windows is strictly for games. the reliability issue isn't that big for me, i think i look at my site more than anyone else. i'm still leaning towards hosting myself unless i find a really good deal.

  3. A judge wrote this? on Slashdot's "Instant" Legal Analysis of the MS Ruling · · Score: 1

I have to agree with Don that Judge Penfield "gets it" My initial response when I started reading the decision was that it sounded more like a techie wrote it than a Judge. I mean a lawyer type discusssing the importance of APIs and cross platform compatibility? After finishing I was impressed that he not only understood the general technical issues involved but also the market dynamics of the computer industry. Of course this is only the first step in the process, there are still sentencing and appeals processes to go through. All that has been established thus far is that Microsoft does hold a monopoly for x86 compatible operating systems, any implications of impropriety contained in the FoF are just that, implications. More fun to come. If you haven't read the entire FoF I recommend reading it all.
