  1. Essential Lifeboat Techniques on Transitioning From Developer To Management? · · Score: 1

You will have many pressures on your time - Getting Things Done by David Allen offers a practical methodology for processing work effectively. You need to understand how many things you can effectively do at once, for most people it's one, but for many it's two or more. Do this many and no more. Allow time to move from one task to another, to get rid of the "old" task and prepare yourself for the "new" task. Understand your "work unit". This is the amount of time you can spend on a task working at maximum efficiency. For me, it's 25-30 minutes, for others it's an hour, or "until the job's done". Everyone is different. Organise your time into these units. If you have a "work unit" of one hour and an eight hour task, spread the task over eight individual hours if you can, alternating with other tasks. If you can't, recognise that you're going to be somewhat more stressed working out of this pattern. You need to be ready to forgive yourself for not achieving everything you want - there is an inexhaustable hopper of work others want you to do, let alone the things you want to do yourself. You are one person, and you have x work units a day and you can do y things at once. That's your total capacity. Then, learn to delegate effectively. I.e. expecting the person doing the task to do it differently than you would, probably slower and with less motivation.
