  1. Is Slashdot fading away??? on Is Slackware Fading Away? · · Score: 1

there will always be a need for a minimalist distro just because all the new kids that read slashdot don't use it doesn't me it is fading away. just because slashdot is continuing to push away veteran readers with ridiculous "ask slashdot" questions doesn't mean slashdot is fading away. just because 2 tools aren't going to be developed for slackware doesn't mean it is fading away.....
i can go on and on with this...but i'm wasting my time!!!

  2. Re:HP uses linux... on Where is Largest Linux Desktop Install? · · Score: 2, Informative

HP isn't the only large company utilizing the linux desktop. lots of companies are taking advantage of the linux desktop (and the price) in their R&D departments...even if what you do has next to nothing to do with Linux. here at the R&D site, for example, we have over 20 linux boxes that are used for their X display capablities so that UNIX and windows developers can work on software that has nothing to do with Linux. go figure.

  3. PCPowerCooling.com on Building Quieter Computers · · Score: 1

PC Power and Cooling has this nice siliencer line of power supplies if you want a quiet power supply fan. Your gonna pay more money, but i can definately say that if you have a noisy supply now, one of their new supplies will sound whisper quiet when compared to any old supply. For cpu fans your on your own. you can try on from PCPower&Cooling, but i don't know how quiet they are.

you are so right bro. we are holding back from what could potentially bring us away from fighting mother nature via massive pollution to a more sustainable way of living. without losing the convience of automobile type travel. if done right and done slowly over time...there is no reason lots of people have to lose out on this necessary shift. The only key problem will turn out to be some people's unwillingness to change their life. the status quo is boring...but thats what most are comfortable with, especially those with families to worry about, etc. I guess my point of view comes from the outside consume pov only....being in the middle of it all may change my belief, but it shouldn't change societies ideals...and we all are slowly realizing that we f---ing the planet (our only home for now) over everyday.
monopolies must end.[period] honest people know what needs to be done...but the power isn't on the people's side. I have yet to see democracy work on the global/world level!

  5. everyone here has this all wrong! on The Leased Life? · · Score: 1

From what I've read so far out of all these postings...there is a theme that rings true. Your all looking at this issue from a software license point of view (which is understandable...after all this is /.), but your not seeing the overall, broad picture that the "Leased Life" article is trying to show you. We (society) are letting things get out of hand ourselves! We don't read the fine print anymore....let alone the main clauses in the contracts we sign. Often they are riduclously long...and incomprehensible, so I don't blame you. Who has the time in the society we live in today. Besides, with the little time we have who wants to fight over a disagreement you have with the license or contract. No wonder why consumers are being taken advantage of everyday. It is far too easy for corporations. Let us not forget it is our dollar that ultimately gives them thier power. Beauracracy has its place, but it is killing our freedom and adversly affecting our personal lives more than ever! --> you can quote me on that! Economic trends reflect society and society doesn't have time for bullsh!t contracts and license agreements. People will sign away their own mother to a Corporation one day and never know it! As far as the "Leased Life" article is concerned....I would like to answer the question they pose: "Is there a relationship between tech patterns and what's going on outside [i.e. the outside world]?" Guess what guys, we as a society decide what is appropriate for us (just whats going on outside). If we keep saying "f-it!" to those contracts and agreements (beauracracy) we sign everyday.. ..you might as well move to a communist nation, cause you certainly will never be free! A long time ago Americans had the dream of owning their own land and being their own men (and women), with no King (or Queen) telling them who to be and limiting thier freedoms at will. I wonder where that dream is today! thissurfer
