Start at affordable gaming prices (insert canned laughter here) + Inflation + Raising gas prices + Debts (increasingly a way of life!) + Raising prices in new game systems and game for said system include: + games that do not intrest me right now + waiting for games to go to the bargain/used bin anyways(well at least I DO... i RARELY buy brand new games) = SALES SLUMP!

Yeah, I mean I have like 8 consoles as it is! Of course, none of are the new-fangled "next-gen" consoles...

So what if the PS2 sold more and was the "clear winner" of the previous generation. The fact is, regardless of the sales amount of XBox vs. PS2, I bet Microsoft made a financial killing in their Live service. In this regards, doesn't matter who sold more, it's who made the $$ with strong services (because neither Sony or MS really made much of a profit with their consoles). MS provided a strong gaming online-service, people bought into it in troves (who had an XBox, that is). PS2 had... what? ... FFXII - whee! (which I am sure had their own large gathering, but that was all Square-Enix, not Sony).

Heck, I know a lot of people disappointed with Chrono Cross (made 5-6 years ago) for similar reason. Personally, I thought it was a wonderful idea getting rid of XP farming and level grinding. You HAD to get through the story to advance.
