    1. Just say no. Sure. Try it sometime: I did that once. Our group got fired.

There are some exceedingly powerful incentives to accede to management directives.

    2. Choose a language that encourages quality work. Try that too.

Question for the community: When was the last time management allowed you to choose your language of implementation? Particularly when you were maintaining an existing valuable codebase?

It isn't a question of kewlness, it's a question of the value of rewriting multimillion-line systems almost from scratch while the market is racing past your company.

    Time to think about reality...

I also applaud IBM's foray into the OSD model.

This is welcome change from the days of yore, when IBM was the Big Bad Wolf (I've got the grey hairs to prove it!). They were a *real* juggernaut, right down to the having the most hard-nosed, market-dominating sales model I had seen, until Microsoft came along (they could teach even IBM some tricks in the market domination game).

Now I have an IBM TP600 (Linux) laptop and several IBM disk drives, all of which are excellent, competitive products that I would be hard-pressed to replace.

Good Job, IBM, and PLEASE keep up the good work!!!
