  1. A step forward for downloadable content on Sony Funding 'About 40' Downloadable Games · · Score: 1

Okay, so we're Slashdot and lately we hate Sony. But let's recognize good news when we get it. The Xbox Live Arcade has been awesome, but it's firmly rooted in retro-style casual games. If the Sony can stand on Microsoft's shoulders and offer short games with higher production values, they could have something special on their hands.

Since the NES, console games have pretty much been "one size fits all," a distribution model that led to lower budget games often feeling empty or artificially padded. With downloadable games, the price is scaleable so you can make the game whatever length "feels right," then charge for the actual value. We've already seen it work well for retro and casual games; now let's see what it can do for timely movie tie-ins and episodic games.

I rolled my eyes when I heard about David Jaffe's "John Lennon" aspirations, but maybe he's on to something...

  2. The first mover advantage starts to play out... on The Media's Best of Show for E3 2006 · · Score: 1

I ignored the 360 at launch because it just wasn't what I wanted out of a generation jump: prettier graphics, more online features, and not much else. But I guess if a system sticks around long enough, it can't help but get some awesome games. Lagging a year behind and packing very little to differentiate itself, how does Sony expect to catch up with the 360's libarary? The Wii is still my must-play system for 2006, but if this keeps up, there may be a 360 in my future.

  3. I still can't believe this isn't a joke on Under the Table of Rockstar's Table Tennis · · Score: 1

Shouldn't this have been posted two days ago? Because then my brain would be able to process it. As it is, I really can't imagine that it's not a tremendous hoax.

Isn't it a lot more believable that ping pong is an unlockable minigame in the 360 version of Bully? And this is their way of building buzz?

Maybe that was the original idea, and somewhere along the way Rockstar realized they'd get an even bigger laugh out of making the joke a reality.

  4. Cool, but its success hinges on two things... on DS Web Browser in June · · Score: 1

As neat as it would be to browse the web on my DS, an app like this would only be worth a purchase if: 1. It stores pages for offline viewing. 2. It allows you to compose and view e-mails offline. I would totally get this if I could use it to tap out a few e-mails offline or download some RSS feeds and read them on the go. But otherwise, the time I'm most likely to encounter a wi-fi hotspot is when I'm at home with an actual computer. I imagine those two things are technically feasible, but since they haven't been mentioned yet, I'll have to be a pessimist and assume they ain't happening.
