  1. Yet another proprietary protocol? on Napster Attacks Open Source Clone · · Score: 3

What makes some of these companies think that whenever somebody writes a piece of software that exploits the flaws in their software, it's not their fault? This is just like the whole DeCSS business. Big (well, Napster isn't that big in this case) corporates trying to protect their "proprietary" software when the only reason it needs protection is because it's weak. It also seems pretty hipocritical to me when Napster, a company which is basically devoted to assiting people engaging in music piracy, tries to shout the same "it's mine!" call as the music industry. I don't know about you, but this I downloaded the gnap source code as soon as I saw this posted.

  2. Just how do they think they will manage this? on License to Surf · · Score: 1

This sort of "feature" of the web would require some pretty fundamental changes to TCP/IP. What makes them think that these changes will be widely accepted? Certainly, the new non-private protocol (let's call it PT/PCT) would have to be backwards compatible with TCP/IP for it to even get a foot in the door, but by being backwards compatible, there would be no good reason for major servers to switch. Sounds like these guys ought to start their own network, independant of today's Internet, if they plan on getting this done.

  4. My question on Interview: Ask the KDE Developers · · Score: 1

This question addresses the relative strengths of KDE and GNOME. Clearly, KDE is a much more stable and efficient environment than GNOME, but in the area of customizability and user-frienlyness, GNOME is still ahead. I was wondering how much action is being taken to make KDE 2 more customizable and user friendly. In particular, I was hoping to see a better implementation of mime types being associated with programs.

  5. it's still different. on Usenet Gag Order · · Score: 1

If you recieve threats in the mail, they arrive at your door. You can't just ignore them. But with usenet, or a letter to the editor in fact, by "logging in"/opening the newspaper, you are ASKING for people you don't know to talk to you, and possible harass you. You can always close the newspaper.

  6. There's a difference. on Usenet Gag Order · · Score: 1

When somebody stalks you and harasses you, you don't get to decide "that's it, I'm fed up, I just won't be seeing him any more". With usenet you can. You always have the freedom not to care.

  7. Somebody is way to sensitive here on Usenet Gag Order · · Score: 2

This seems pretty absurd to me. Unlike many other forms of communication, Usenet doesn't force you to read it. If you get tired of a flame war, or fed up with a pesky user, just don't read it anymore! I don't think their is any legal authority for what the judge did. Clearly, (s)he doesn't understand the issue.

Java is a pain. Not only is it a pain to write in, but it still crashes by browser whenever it loads. Couldn't they have written the emulater in C with X and just released the source of the emulator and the game? It would be much more stable...
