I've found this problem with matte screens as well, though. If I take my iBook G4 (which, admittedly, doesn't have the best screen as far as mattes go) outside, I virtually lose all contrast. I can barely see a thing.
On the other hand, our glossy-screened iMac is, unfortunately, across from a window. At certain times of day, I can't see anything at all in the screen- just my own face, staring back at me.
