If you go to a university, and study a *scientific* degree, you are learning something that you *probably* won't learn elsewhere.
If you go to a university, and study a *technical* degree, then I agree, you might be more successfull by starting work as early as possible and learning on the job. Note here, that I'm not really slamming a technical degree here, I'm just saying that work experience is a pretty decent option in that case. In science, though, it's not quite as valid.
The rationale for education doesn't always have to be 'to get a better job', 'to make more money' or, 'to feel superior'...
In my view, university is the best place to *learn*, not neccessarily to 'develop technical skills'.
In their 'video products' section, they claim that their 'compression cam' is written in Java for 'platform independance'.. but under 'system requirements' it says 'win95 or NT4.0'...
Writing grant proposals is a full time job in itself generally.. maybe they have a 'simplified form' for open source projects?
I kind of doubt that most of the open source projects would qualify anyways... I think Microsoft would cry foul if the new open source replacement for MSWord was built with government funds..:-)
(not that they wouldn't cry foul if it was built any other way anyways.. but still.. )

It's not about being rich.. it's about success. Who cares if you don't have money if you have your work being seen my thousands of people every day...
