I don't know, man. I liked Tayler's article much better then that "intelligent" letter writer's paranoid collection of non-sequiturs.

Saying that it takes Western, Harvard educated experts to teach Russians how to steal, really made my day. Sure, next thing we know, it actually were Americans who taught Russians how to drink vodka.

As a matter of fact, I view the privatization policy of Mr. Chubais, as an ugly but necessary compromise with the communist management elite. These people had to be bought to prevent them from sabotaging the reforms.

This is why, just as communist societies damage the people (communist countries, without exception, are very poor countries), so too communist software damages society.
I think you misunderstand what is the real problem with communism. It's precisely the greed -- the greed and the envy of the poor majority toward the rich few -- that made it such potent political force in the last century. What converted the ideas of Marx from an obscure economic theory into the violent mass movements was a very simple idea: take everyting from the rich and divide it equally among the poor. The majority of people who participated in the communist revolutions where motivated by the prospect of improving their living conditions at the expense of other people rather than by any of these beautiful ideas you can pick from your leftist college profesors in your expensive American universities.
In the free soft movement, the primary motivation for the programmers is to have freedom to develop cool software in cooperation with other programmers without the obnoxious interference from the suits. It has its share of problems, but it has absolutely nothing to do with communism
How could you confuse the desire for creative freedom with the desire for your neighbor's stuff is beyond me.

Moody's article was a clear case of slander.
It has a potential to harm business of RH and other distributions. So, it would make perfect sence of the commercial Linux distros to take Mr. Moody and ABC to court. Even a mere threat of such an action would make ABC drop Mr Moody, faster than you can say settlement. That will be a good riddance and a service to the journalistic community.

That's the good point and I wanted to post something similar before I found your post.
I'm an immigrant from Russia, and in my own community, I see a lot of families where a 10 years old kids are the most important people because only they know enough English to deal with the outside world. Most of the time this inversion of authority is not very healthy. I've seen a lot of really screwed up kids growing up in such families. Their parents might not be computer gurus or even English speakers, but they know a thing or two about decency and ethics and plain common sence. And under normal circumstances they'd teach their children those good things. But not when the children see their parents as irrelevant dinosaurs. Now, seeing your parents as irrelevant dinosaurs, might be OK when you're 18, but it's really bad when you're 10.

Ever heard about mod_perl (you know they use it on that obscure slashdot site), FastCGI, or a few other ways to avoid respawning the perl scripts? Beside, I think the original poster was talking about writing servers rather than doing web server programing. I don't see how Java servlets can help you writing something like Apache. In my experience, non-blocking I/O is always more efficient on heavy loads then multithreading. It makes code more complex though.

Anne Mcaffry? The impression I got from trying to read her book (I think it was Lion Pride) was that she can't write fiction to save her life. Her style was incredibly clumsy, similar in quality to what a not particulary bright high schooler would write in the English composition class. That is really a shame -- she did have some interesting ideas, it's just her complete failure at storytelling made it a torture to read. I'm not sure why a thirteen years old would want to read books written by someone whose command of English is likely to be poorer then his or her own. I think, putting her in the same list with Heinline and Asimov is an insult to the true masters of the genre.
