I purchased a Compaq Presario R4000 with the Radeon integrated graphics, took me forever to get native resolution off the widescreen, I have NO acceleration, never got it to work. I am NEVER buying ATI again. NOT for my desktop and NEVER EVER with a laptop. It's been an absolute nightmare and I've been using linux since 1999. I have an older Nvidia MX440 on my desktop, runs great. I use it with my 37 inch VIZIO LCD TV.
It's awesome, but sometimes laggy. Need to upgrade to a newer Nvidia. Stay away from ATI if you wish to do anything 3D accelerated in Linux!
I am just giving my opinion, if you don't like it you are welcome to write so. I am on point and excuse me for not being in the same sarcasm realm as you. Stupid things like replacing a perfectly good battery result from... well re-read my post if you like. Like I said, I am on point.
This is not about providing tech support so much as saving money. It is much less expensive to pay a squad guy than it is to replace that laptop ($1200 plus) most of the time. This is more about the bottom line. Saving money by having cheap labor for fixing would-be expensive problems(sending it back to manufacturer or eating the cost). Image upgrade for Best Buy at a time when people are realizing the service sucks and so does the help. But what the hell do you expect from usual big company mentality(low pay for higher technical knowledge). The only people that stick around at those jobs are high school drop-outs and low self esteem individuals, at least at the lower levels.
I should expect some degree of hand holding when I spend that much money and have the stupid thing break 2 weeks later. Fix it or replace it, and do quick dammit. Stop dickin around.:)
I agree with dirty. If the opensource community wants to be taken seriously, well they(we) should show some class. Besides, 8 or 10 years ago we didn't have the wars of today, road side bombs, remote detonation with cell phones, and all other types of devices. We are expecting no one to ask for our personal info, yet they should put out all these data sheets or whatever to anybody.
Consider it a neccesary evil of sorts. Not our fault, just a result of terror. People who put their life on the line (IEDs) while you confortably sit back and code. All hardware manufacturers will eventually expect the same when the federal government demands from them some consideration and responsibility in safe guarding information that could be used to build, modify or whatever such devices.
Small price to pay for a free(as in beer) OS. Don't you think?
My 2 cents.
Them is both copies of window managers for linux, period.
