  1. RAID = speed on Linux Now Supports Ultra ATA/100 · · Score: 2

Has anyone heard of harddisks with built-in RAID (yet)? Technically it wouldn't be difficult to implement, just a new controller board onto an existing hard disk. Just make sure the disk is multi-platter. I believe there are people who would rather have a fast drive rather than a big one.

Hey, has anyone tried hardware-hacking harddisks yet? Wow, I can think of novel RAID formatting schemes right now! e.g. to reduce track to track movement time, one could implement tracks 1-80 on platter 1 and reverse the order on platter 2. or a hack to double effective spindle rates by applying the same princple, but sector wise.

Firstly, you should realise that these two OS'es are meant for different things. NTs are probably used in your environment for non-critical stuff. Solaris is used more for more robust requirements. For example, take the difference between your own personal computer going down, and your company's e-commerce server going down. So simply put is that the Solaris OS includes a lot more failsafe than an NT box. This accounts for your expensive Unix admin. since it requires a lot more technical ability. Who says that NT doesn't require administration. If so, then who set up your computer for you? If your customers complain that your e-mail service is slowwww who is going to fix the problem for you? Administrators? Nahh.... and for the 'tuning the mbuf kernel inode for asynchronous IO' probably has to do with filesystem performance tweaking.

I wanted to buy the mindstorms kit for prototyping purposes but there were too little acutator an sensors that could be fixed on the RCX.

I was thinking a system in which multiple sensors/motors were linked via a bus would be more useful - I wonder if the RCX can be programmed to do that.

By the way, has anyone managed to build a lego based laser guided bomb yet?

Instead of using a giant claw or what not, why not direct a giant asteroid to crash on neptune? Hopefully we might me able to get something flying out of there. Anyway, if there really was diamonds on neptune, we should have seen some of those on asteriod belts somewhere right?
