Exellent to see the market pressure do something good here. Since there are many freemail hosts, why would anybody use the one without spam control.
However, my biggest "spam" problem has never been the pure spamming (gee I compiled this adress list from a web spider. I bet they all want to hear about my amazing new porn site) All of you who reads/. allready know how to deal with these jerks. No, my problem is those who abuses the fact that I actually signed up for some mailing list at one time. I might have bought a server component at one time, and of course I want to know of any upgrades or bugfixes to it. However I don't want them to send "valuable information" about their other products. In the same manner there are a lot of mailing lists with some really valuable info, but a low signal to noise ration. And then there is that nice feature "company wide messages" Oh thank you mister manager for sending your 3 meg power point presentation to everyone here! I really loved to wait for it to pass through my modem. Unfortunalely there are some really valid uses for that group adress so I cant just block it out.
Any of you who have any nice solutions to this sort of semi-legitimate spamming?
Now a toaster is just about the most silly thing I can think of to put on the net. Yes, it would be nice to remote control it in the morning BUT how an I suppposed to remote control in the bread?
OK so the toaster was a joke - I got it now hehe But actually the same thing goes for a VCR. I would love to be able to remote program my VCR, since I always find out about films a want to tape too late. Now what good would a net-enabled VCR do me? "Sure dude I'll start recording channel 2 at 21:00" Wait, do I have a tape in? What's on it allready? Is there room for another film? So before I replace the casette with a HD an IP adress is of no use to me. Then what do I have? A device with a cpu a network connection a hard disk a dvd and a display... Wait a minute havent I seen someting similar somewhere...
Now the rules of war always seem to have a little caveat: "The above doesn't apply if: a)you can get away with it. b)you are in really deep shit"
Frankly I think that their reason for not using cyber attacks is that they were afraid that others would use the same methods back. And BTW: malicious tampering with your system is a major pain in peace-time, but compared to a couple of tomahawk missiles it is not much. Even more so if one of them is aimed at your main server.
Cyber terrorism is a nice way for the little guy to mess with the big guy, but the big guy has oh so many meaner ways to mess with the little guy. If, for example, M$ wants to get at Joe Hacker, they don't go changing his homepage. They use lawyers (if you didn't know:).
Now of course there are a number of semi-secret government agencies around the world who, I'm sure, are glad to spread a little havoc upon their enemies du jour from behind a keyboard. but that is a completly different matter
regarding: "I was a faithful Navigator user up until version 4. I continued to use Navigator for a while after it was released, but fewer and fewer sites looked correct and I had to switch to IE."
what are you talking about??? I use netscape almost all the time (I very rarely use IE, usually if it is called by some program) and I do not see any major problems with webpages.
I still mainly use NS because of my old bookmarks. What I really *hate* about NS is that it reloads the page on resize and print... losing all client scripts.
...I'd rather say that Politicians, like most of us, are quite clueless on 99% of all areas. C'mon, the average geek would be just as lost in capitolium as a politician on comdex.
From a politicians view, the net is just another media. What "they" have a hard time grasping is that it is a distributed media. You can control a newspaper by controlling the editor, but without the editor, and with global distribution "they" just dont have any tools to control it.
Break granted:-) Actually I'm more irritated at people who think "Europe = EU" or those here (in Sweden) who say "I went down to europe" or something like that. Anyway we usually refer to US citizens as "Yankees" even if they never left mississippi... sorry bout that.
...Its no problem to make a server running any OS rebooting really slow if you try. Now, the contest ought to be for the slowest rebooting time on a machine set up by some certified MS whatever, in a place where the downtime really hurts. Like in a cold storage. "Oh sorry, you will just have to leave the 10 tons of butter out here in the sun. Computer problems you know..." (true story)
No other country has more than one representative. Why should the US have? Europe is not a nation. USA is The truly underrepresentated are countries without representation.
quote from/. One American on the ICANN board so far, folks. quote from newsbytes three Europeans, one Canadian, one Asian and one US candidate Basic math: One US citizen plus one Canadian equals two americans. BTW Yes US is the leading nation on the web, but perhaps mostly because all "international" domains are us-controlled and located. As I see it, a business or organisation that uses a.com or.org domain is not US-based It is web-based.
Well no crying wolf until we have seen more of this. I allready have a separate identification box for my bank accounts, why should a palm be less secure? One well protected storage for ID:s is alot better than a dozen half-protected. (Never mind the password, I'll just use my name or I'll forget it)
I'd bet my ass that for every dollar Microsoft loses to piracy, three more dollars are generated in other sectors of the economy. And I'd bet my ass that thirty dollars are lost at M$'s potential competitors. If you want to compete with M$ at all you'll have to give your work away for free. Now I like to get paid, actually... I don't mind paying for tools, but when the price of those tools far outweigh the benefits, then those tools become a liability...Or when I have to pay for them, just because "everybody else uses them"
I have a confession to make I like Unix, I Like Linux, I even like Mac. But I code server applications for NT. And client applications for Win 9X Why do you ask? Because going all MS makes it so much less painful over all. NT is not the best server platform, Win 9X is not the best client. And they are not the cheapest either. BUT going all M$ is a nice compromise, considering my coding time, my clients cost for their platform and my clients end users time to learn how to use the system. Sorry, linux. You are the best in your strong areas, but I, and probably many with me, stick with MS until the competition is better in all areas. (May the day come...)
I'd add that using the Internet as it is currently designed to communicate between members of a terrorist organisation would not be a good idea -- it goes against the "cell" concept which is known to be the best way to organise. Even messages on private bulletin boards carry enough information in the headers to allow substantial information about the whole network to be deduced for any security agency which can gain access to the routers. Yup! I've heard the phrase "Internet is dangerous 'cause it allows the nuts to team up" too many times. What is on the net is also available to the cops (if they know what they're looking for) And no serious terrorist would announce his attack like that. But... To create disruption I might just have to make people believe that an attack is coming, for example by posting "terrorist plans" on a BBS That kind of phony terrorism might be a bigger threat than the real bombers
Yeah stick to a standard... Inches and gallons is NOT, repeat NOT a standard! It is at best an alternative system used locally in Britain and the US. That adds up to about 5% of the worlds population. The whole point of a standard is that it enables us to avoid these mishaps. And for NASA using anything but metric, well,... Anyone who has ever tried to solve a physics equation in inches and ounces will gladly throw anything non-metric out.

considering Oracle's pricing well...
If a US politician wants to pass laws on the net- fine! As long at those laws only affect the .us domain.
