Or is there some kind of insurmountable barrier that prevents Direct X 10 from even theoretically running on XP?
Yes, those barriers are called Microsoft Money(tm)(not the program), Microsoft Marketing(tm) and Microsoft Lawyers(tm). DX10 support in software only is junk, just like software-only support for OpenGL is junk. You need it in the hardware of the video cards. MS won't let NVidia or ATI/AMD put out drivers that work with non-Vista OS'es that have support for DX10. Period. I can guarantee it is part of the licensing deal. So even though DX10 could certainly run under Win2K or WinXP, MS just won't allow it. That is the whole _point_ of crappy proprietary stuff. The person holding the keys gets to call all the shots.

In constrast, OpenGL 2.x can be used on just about any OS. If NVidia and ATI/AMD update their hardware to support OpenGL 2.x (like they have for more recent cards), the software drivers for any OS will know how to take advantage of the features in OpenGL 2.x.

With proprietary junk like DX10, you get extreme limitations imposed by the "key holders". What MS says, goes WRT DirectX. Sadly, too many game companies bought into the DX bandwagon since they were generally making MS-Only games, they didn't care about an MS-Only gaming API.

I wish the game companies came together and really pushed OpenGL so that the games would not be locked down to MS-Only.

Stop with the "MS is doing open stuff" until MS actually comes out with something that is open from end-to-end. Heck, IE supports open standards like HTML, CSS (to some extent), EMCA JavaScript, etc. However, it is the proprietary crap that MS throws on top that makes sites "IE-Only", like client-side VBVScript and the MS-Only conditional comments, etc.

For example, we had big problems with Netegrity working with our corporate intranet setup with PeopleSoft. Netegrity was not forwarding things correctly through our server farm and SSL accelerator. After working with Netegrity, we got an update that fixed the issue with the binary only Apache module we had to use.

If it was Open Source, we would have been able to step-through the code in debug mode and fix it ourselves. But we couldn't since it was proprietary, closed source software. The cost of training is crap. Stick any user on a Mac or Linux desktop that is setup well and there won't be much need for training.

The big cost is all the custom software that was written with an MS-Only IDE, to MS-Only API's and specs. That is the real killer.

I am a senior programmer with more than a decade of experience. During that time about 90% of my work has been MS-only stuff.

The funny thing, all the code I have written for non-MS OS'es has been pretty portable. The MS software, well, that has been MS-Only. MS designed their whole software "ecosystem" to lock you in.

So the real cost of switching from MS is not in training, but in re-writing custom apps. Notice I didn't say _porting_. Most MS-Only apps don't port very well. MS made it this way for a reason, to lock-in customers. The more MS software your company uses, the more locked-in you are.

Enterprise support is called that for a reason. Have you ever worked for a large corp that pays for enterprise support? I have worked as a programmer for 3 fortune 500 companies. I work closely with our admins and Enterprise support means something. We can give a call about a failed NIC and get it by the end of the day or latest next morning. We have people from Sun, HP, Microsoft, Netegrity, etc that actually come to our location. Not some "consultant" that claims to know stuff, but the actual people from the companies we are paying for support.

I personally think "Enterprise support" is a little over rated and very over priced. However, no CIO/CTO is going to go with some small-town solution. Their butt is on the line. They want the assurance that there is support there when needed. From my experience, that support is hardly used at big corps. Most of us IT guys get the job done one-way-or-the-other. However, our CIO will still always budget for the annual support contracts, regardless of how little we used them.

Look at Red Hat. They make most of their money from support, not selling Linux. Any Linux admin can handle the support needs of Red Hat. Yet the top managers still pay for Red Hat support, just for a "security blanket".

Apple doesn't even come close to having an Enterprise support system setup. I don't think they want to. Until they do, they will just be a niche market.

At the fortune 500 I work for, MS Outlook is the most used MS Office app. Period. There is no support for that on the Mac. Personally I would love for our admins to get a clue and switch to a real IMAP server that is not MS Exchange so that our email client is not forced on us. Sadly, I don't get to make that call.

Photoshop? Huh, why do Mac-boys always try to throw that around? How many of the big corps (where MS makes their money) _need_ Photoshop? Probably close to none. The majority of image editing that employees at a big corp does could be handled by the Gimp, without question. Actually where I work, a lot of the programmers like me use Gimp and the graphics dudes don't use Photshop but Macromedia suite. For those circumstances that need Photoshop, well just give those employees an XP or Mac box and be done with it.

Linux can handle the majority of desktop, development and server needs of most big corps. The only problem is that most big corps have most of their eggs in the MS-Basket, so switching to Mac or Linux is a long shot.
