While I thank you for mentioning my site, I must also point out that it is currently unmaintained. The one-page in particular is woefully out-of-date. The main link at http://linux-sound.org/ calls a frames version of the material in the one-page, plus more. I'll try to provide one final update before I leave the site for good. I hope that an alternative to my site will evolve from a community-led initiative. We await the day.

  3. 64Studio (Debian) on Are You Switching to 64-bit Processors? · · Score: 1

Check out 64Studio http://64studio.com/. I've been running it for a while on an AMD64 3200, 2G RAM. Works great. Considering that I upgraded from an 800 MHz Duron, my opinion re: speed doesn't count for much. Obviously this machine *smokes* the Duron. Recently I've been having some problems with video going all shakey (side to side) which I suspect is coming from my cheap video card (low-profile nVidia gForce 7300, 128 MB RAM, PCI Express bus), but otherwise I'm pleased with the box's performance. Btw, the base system is Debian pure 64-bit.

  4. obligatory Hit Men reference on RIAA Wants Artist Royalties Lowered · · Score: 1

See Fredric Dannen's book "Hit Men" for the inside story. A friend who studied at the MTSU school for audio engineering said it was required reading. Apparently the administration felt it necessary to advise their graduates regarding exactly what sort of people they'd be dealing with. Dannen names names, and the photos are priceless. Y'know, you really can be free in the US, you just have to work at avoiding the pimps and slavers.

  6. saw the 2002 show on Here Come the Leonids 2006 · · Score: 1

I watched the show in 2002 while standing in the middle of a country road at about 4 AM. I'm in NW Ohio USA, the night was perfectly clear, and I must have seen a hundred or so meteors over the space of an hour or so. It was one of the most remarkable celestial displays I've ever seen. Alas, as another poster mentioned, we've had lousy weather here, overcast and rainy, so I'll just have to hope for a clear patch some time during the night. I'd love to watch the Leonids again.

  9. obligatory Prestowitz reference on Microsoft's 12-Step Program · · Score: 3, Insightful

In his book "Trading Places" Clyde Prestowitz noted that the Japanese frustrated the US trade delegations (during the Reagan/Bush Sr era) by openly agreeing to everything asked or demanded of them, then turning away and doing exactly what they planned to do in the first place. The US guys thought the Japanese were lying, but they missed (then) the significance of the ploy. I'm sure that Microsoft's managers and spin-surgeons are savvy to the method now, so quite frankly I don't believe anything that comes out of their PR department. If they're talking you can be sure they're lying. I just watched the original "Clerks" again. I'm thinking now that working for Microsoft is like doing contract labor on the Death Star. I'm sure it pays well, but it's ignoble work, contributing to an evil empire. :)
