I live in Rio de Janeiro, by far a much more dangerous city than London could ever be, and I get to walk around with my iPod.
The white earbud thing is completely true. Replacing it by some generic black ones should do the trick in most times. And also putting the earbud wires under your clothes, with the iPod discretely in your pocket, makes it nearly unnoticeable.
If it works here, where you can find a thug with a weapon in almost every corner, it should work in 'gun-free' London.
