I suspect *everybody* knew it was coming. I remember going to my brother's place of employment outside of Boston in, maybe 1980. He showed us rooms where they were doing research on i/c engines and electric modifications for cars, and exactly what it took to get better gas mileage. I remember him saying one room that he didn't have keys for had a stratified-charge engine lab.
'Course, they were also working with MickeyD's on how to cook burgers faster, but whatever...:)
