This has been installed in cars for quite soom time already! In VW and Audi the Air Bag Control modules store up to two crash events and have been this way for a number of years. The upside to all of this only VW can retrieve this data. They have a couple of people that this is all they do is examine this data for law suites both public and private.
I would worry more about your car if it has a GPS than a crash data recorder!!
