isn't it the whole premise of open source that people -want- to improve it (hence allowing everyone access to source code), with or without compensation..!
obviously, compensation is important for pharmaceutical companies where R&D is really expensive. for OS software development, the cost is really just man- (or woman-) hours, and if people -want- to develop then let the code be free!
