  1. What We Need Next on Tivo Source Code Released · · Score: 1

-Would be a really cheap edit controller, some additional memory drive modules with larger storage...oh, and some s-video in/out, an i/r sync with four track audio mastering...

...Heh-heh...With all that rigged to a couple cameras and the right server, "home network" TV would gain a whole new definition.

  2. Just a Symptom of a Larger Problem on Maybe Video Games Don't Make Kids Kill · · Score: 4

Looking back to the early 80's, when home computers were beyone the budgets of a lot of people, a lot of kids I went to school would amuse themselves pretty much in the same manner as previous generations had before them; setting anthills on fire, smashing windows, and carving pinstripes along the sides of cars with a can opener.

In all of these instances, few of the parents felt *their* child had any problem; if anything, it was "a phase everyone goes through, they'll grow out of it", etc. And through such denial and resignation, a small number of people do turn out to be okay, but the rest are pretty much neglected through such action.

Compound this with many adults wanting to take a break from watching their own offspring and it's easy to see how print and broadcast media, along with the web and simulation/roleplaying games have been villainized over the years.

  3. This Isn't News on Dear Mr. Lucas · · Score: 1

This story is old. It happened a long, long, time ago in a galaxy far away.

  4. There Is One Now! on Nothing But Net - For Five Days · · Score: 1

Upon hearing of severed's excursion down South, a polar bear (U.S. $23,845.31) was airdropped in advance to where the 5-day social experiment was to be conducted (shipping costs and insurance bring the total to U.S. $124,322.86). As an additional joke, the total balance was charged to severed's credit account, but due to the timing of the transaction, the figures won't appear until next month's collection statement.

  5. One World in 3 Episodes? on Sci-Fi Channel Making Dune Miniseries · · Score: 1

The main weakness of the the theatrical adaptation was its attempt to sum up as many of the books in the series as it could in three hours. Unless the Sci-Fi version paces its miniseries to cover more depth in its storytelling, it will be nothing more than an adaptation twice as long as its predecessor, yet with the same abridged plotline.

  6. That's Why It's Called Big Business on Has AOL Ruined Netscape? · · Score: 1

AOL's handling of Netscape is typical of any quick merger; by exploiting the track record of a smaller company's "cutting-edge" product, a larger interest will generally view their latest "partner" as a commodity. Apart from its browser, Netscape was most likely purchased in order to serve as part of AOL's research department. The extra cache of their trademark and logo, with Marc Andreesen's press coverage were lucky accidents which helped to sweeten the deal.
