You might consider a company that is streaming the OS and applications over the network. I know Ardence is doing it and a few others. They use PXE boot to bypass the desktop hard drive and beam an OS and app stack image to any PC or server on the network. This type of solution separates hardware from software and eliminates the use of hard drives.
