Attempting to excuse our government's behavior by saying "it's worse someplace else!" is BS. Compared to the Sudan, people in China have it pretty good, so they should be happy with their government, right? We've always had to fight for our freedoms and we'll keep them only as long as we keep fighting and not being content with the "it's better than..." garbage.
So glad to see this article on Slashdot. I've been a co-worker of Rob Hanson's since 2000 and in the near 20 years I've been in the biz I've yet to meet a better programmer. I'm no longer a developer and I haven't read the book yet (thanks for the free copy, Rob...not) but knowing his knowledge and dedication I can only assume that it is nothing short of excellent. My bad. Someone in the Republican Party ought to spring for a $100 USB drive so they can back up their systems. Not only are they criminals and liars but they're completely stupid as well.
Please. I've done computer work for the gov't - they have very strict requirements in terms of backups/redundancy, etc. I'd bet everything I have that there are backup tapes sitting at Iron Mountain with all of their Exchange (or whatever mail system they use) backups on them going back to at least 2000. If they really don't have backups then they should all be at least fired for incompetence.
Apparently his web servers have caught fire as well.
