  1. measuring code on American Programmers are Slackers · · Score: 1

I'm not a software engineer, and certainly not a management type. I normally collect statistics such as these--from one of the project I did last year. I've removed the directory names so that my boss won't recognize the project. ;-)

    dir1 dir2 dir3
    semicolons: 6277 2219 682
    fors: 275 84 25 = 384
    ifs: 881 409 79
    switches: 21 28 5
    cases: 75 83 18
    totals: 7529 2823 809 = 11161
    #functions: 72 90 16

Sorry for how unreadable the table is.

Clearly, these statistics aren't linearly independent. The number of lines containing semicolons includes the lines containing for statements. But still this gives you a sense of how complicated your code is, not just how many lines it is. The ultimate goal is to be able to say something other than "as long as it takes" when asked how long something will take.

Combining this with my other projects, I would guess that I wrote about 14-15K lines of code last year, another 14-15K lines of comments and a 90 page users manual. Pretty puny really.

Hey, can I play this game? :-)

You have an urn and an infinite set of marbles labeled 1,2,3...infinity.

At 11pm you put marbles 1-10 in the urn and take out marble number 1.

At 11:30pm you put marbles 11-20 in the urn and take out marble number 2.

At 11:45pm you put marbles 21-30 in the urn and take out marble number 3.

    And so on.

At midnight how many marbles are in the urn?

  3. Eyes Wide Shut will still be released on Stanley Kubrick Dies · · Score: 1

That's not the point. Kubrick maintained strict control over his films. He would reject a print because the color balance was wrong in a single frame. Now that he's dead, who will get the final cut of "Eyes Wide Shut?" That is the issue.

With Stanley Kubrick alive, no one would be allowed to touch it. Now that he's gone, will the studio butcher it to placate the Ratings Board? Remember the studio cut of Terry Gilliam's "Brazil?" I shudder at the thought of someone touching Kubrick's last film.

What's going to happen to Eyes Wide Shut? But worse still, now he will never be able to make the science fiction film, AI, that he had been planning for so long. What a loss.

I bet you a $1 that you use the same damn qwerty keyboard everybody else in the world uses.

How delightfully American. English and the qwerty keyboard are in the minority on this planet.
