JumpTV Hopes to Succeed where ICraveTV failed.
SubtleNuance writes "32BitsOnline is reporting in this article that a Montreal, Canada startup called JumpTV.com will launch a service similar to the foiled ICraveTV.com. Using BorderControl.com, a more robust -and controversial- system of assuring a users geographical location, the startup is hoping to succeed where its predecessor failed." It figures out where you are (based on your IP) and then gives you television from you area (if its got it) in the form of a an online VCR. How long will this one last? -

MP3.com To Restart My.MP3.com
retep writes: "MP3.com is planning to restart the My.MP3.com service that launched the lawsuit against it. However, it will probably launch without any music from Universal Music Corp. Instead it will probably offer music from record companies that have reached licensing deals with MP3.com Full story online at 32bitonline. " This had actually been submitted earlier, but this story had some additional information. The Universal is a key part because those are the ones who won the lawsuit against MP3.com, while they've managed to settle with almost everyone else. -

Will Rambus Go Bust?
retep writes: "32BitsOnline has a interesting article about how the new memory standard RAMBUS may go bust. Essentially a bunch of missteps with Intel's Camino chipset, high costs, the rise in popularity of alternative CPU's such as the Athlon and a lack of performance may prove its undoing. I remember a story in Wired just a year or two ago praising RAMBUS for its innovative tactics; look what's happened now." -

AOL and Time Warner - the next Microsoft?
plasticquart writes "A recent article by Clifford Smith over at 32bitsonlne.com outlines his theory on the recent spat of Internet-related lawsuits. As he puts it: "What do the lawsuits against everybody in the Known Universe concerning DeCSS, mp3.com, and Napster all have in common?
Time Warner. Let's make that AOL and Time Warner." The article goes on to outline the direct interests of Time Warner and Co. in squelching content distribution (uh, hello - money). Quite an interesting read, indeed. " -
Civ:CTP Preview
palpatine writes "At 32 Bits Online Magazine, we have been testing a beta of Civilization: Call to Power for Linux for some time now. Our staff has been tirelessly working to test the new features of this exciting game, and we like it. In this preview, we take a closer look at Call to Power for Linux, including its features, the beta version, and the actual progress of a CTP game. " I played the preview release a bit. Had a few bugs that I'm sure are fixed by now. My 2 second summary is that its definitely the largest professional game of its type for Linux... but I think I really want Alpha Centauri. Of course, once I get my hands on the final CTP release, and get the LAN up at the new house, I fully intend to lose many late night hours to CTP. -

Linux Distributions Compared
palpatine writes "In this comparative review, five major Linux distributions are compared, including Caldera OpenLinux 1.3, Debian GNU/Linux 2.0, Red Hat Linux 5.2, Slackware Linux 3.6, and S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3." They also mention several of the lesser known distributions at the end. No surprise that RH5.2 takes the editors choice, although on the whole, it seems like a fair analysis. Figure now is a good time to rerun the distro poll too. Break out the asbestos. -
