Low Resource Suggestion
Most distributions have roughly the same footprint. Even if you compile your own kernel, deselect almost everything, take everything out of
/etc/rc3.d (or equivalent) and do hdparm tweaks, etc.
I once tried to do something similiar on a '96 DX4-75mhz 16M ram Thinkpad. All I wanted was a graphical Linux environment. Windows 95 (one of the nicer builds) ran much smoother then even the leanest distro's of the time. The problem was X. It was/is a resource hog. I think your best bet is to try one of the things floating around that do not require an X server. Try directvnc. No X server required. -
Re:This just in...
Never said collecting the data was in invasion of privacy, I said if they go looking for criminals in the data its an invasion of privacy. Law enforcement should be held at a higher standard when using data for criminal charges. Some states understand this, Texas for one.
Your argument is analogous to saying that convenience stores can't run security cameras because not everyone's a thief. It makes no sense. In fact, it makes everyone who's not a thief potentially more secure.
Pfft.
Its more like, If the store sold your shopping lists to insurnace companies, that you smoke, drink, and eat fatty foods, and then you loose your health insurance. Or maybe you bought, rope, ammo, duct tape, and a hunting knife, and they alert the police, there goes your camping trip. Or you that you bought a gays right newsletter, and they inform your work, and you get fired.

Re:Apex AD600
Well... I just posted about how my Apex 600 wont play some Disney DVDS (Stuart little) the other day.
Plus Someone replied about how the "Cd-noise" is rather common with the newer APEXs. The remotes/onscreen menus are quite horrible. (I own a newer apex ad-1100 also)
I bought a couple Apexs thinking it would be cool to play mp3s/vcd's in the living room. But really, I hardly ever do that, just DVDs. Burned twice with crappy quality, im sticking with name brand models now, most support vcd/svcd/mp3 and are of better quality. Plus my next dvd will have progressive scan. (And hopefully the ability to force skip over those damn commericals/fbi logos)

Let me see if I can recap my video card history.
Linux - ISA Trident card
Amiga - (Paula, Fat Agnus and Denise - OCS)
Win311 - PCI Trident Card (1 meg memory, yes!)
Win95 - S3 Virge (de-cellerator, Came with OEMed Decent)
Win98 - Nvidia TNT 8 megs (Diamond MM)
Win98SE - Dual Voodoo2's and Nvidia TNT (DMM)
Win98SE - Dual Voodoo2's and Nvidia TNT2 (DMM)
Win98SE - Geforce 1 (DMM)
Win2K - Geforce 256 (Asus)
Win2K - Geforce 2MX (Asus)
WinXP - Geforce 3 Ti500 (Asus)
Linux Box - PCI Trident (8 meg)
Linux Box2 - S3 Savage AGP (16 meg)
I remember looking at video cards for some unix boxes, the 2 choices for a cheap card for a long time was Jaton branded pci cards(Trident chips) or Cirus video cards. I tried to go with jaton, the trident chips always had good opensource drivers. I still try to get trident videos card for linux boxes I build, but they are harder to find at local wholesale stores.
The only card I never used, which I heard had great linux support was any Matrox cards, the prices were just to high, and always slower than the others for games.

My Top Complaints about Mozilla
1. Extremely Slow on extremely large sites, unresponsive (looks like program hangs) (large tables, source code, large amount thumbnails)
2. One busy tab can hang Mozilla.
3. Image place holders should allow you to scroll a page while its loading. Scroll bar freezes.
4. Spell Checker crashes. (to be fair, its a beta spellchecker)
5. Crashs on multiple tabs loading.
6. Little Bloated, Would like things seperated, Mozilla browser crashs, email crashs with it, downloads crash.
7. Personal bar doesnt wrap, should have a drop down menu at the end. (imho)
8. Downloading, Mozilla copies the file, after it downloads, and hangs until copied.. (not to mention if it crashs, you loose your download, very annoying, might switch to a download program to bypass problem) Why cant it just save to the directory you select? Why copy, and need 2x the space...
They fixed the context menus on the personal bar when I submitted a bug report, All I can is WOW. These guys are on the ball about fixing it. But I see a trend to blame the website authors and mark bugs as "Evangelism" or "WontFix", or push off till next year. I do believe thou, some of the developers are off on a break, so thats why the push off till next year.
Remember, I am not a developer. I just read the news, report and follow the bug reports. I truely like Mozilla, themes, tabs, email/news client that is very nice. I would consider my self as a poweruser, I do tend to push mozilla harder than the average folks.

DirectFB and VNC
Been wanting to setup a dedicated VNC station. Trying to get DirectFB and DirectVNC to work. Not much success, but after seeing the screenshots, this looks ideal for a central VNC console. And with VNC supported on almost everything, including some toasters would rock. (BTW, we call some network appliances toasters at work, aka, a simple server with no internal disks, throw away, replacable.)
I can see allot of potential for uses of vnc and directfb, and micro-vnc embedded appliances. (Software KVM, VideoCapture, Security, Service controls, Monitoring applications, etc..)
BTW, Gentoo has built in support for DirectFB. Now if DirectVNC just came preconfigured also...
