Re: Why micromanage this?
I know Aduva http://www.aduva.com/ is one but it only works for Solaris and Linux not Windows (or at least it didn't)... once you got it setup and configured it worked well but the main issue was describing the rules as to when a system could be patched, etc. Like the ranking of the systems... big thing it allowed was rolling back... so if you had something you needed to roll back you could do it across multiple servers just like deploying the patch...
But like any software package, it takes time to deploy and learn it to be effective, otherwise it becomes shelf-ware... -
Re:I'd be more interested if...
There is a company that does this and in my opinion better the levanta.
It's name is aduva and it supports solaris linux hybrid networks.
It support also tons of arch's in linux like s390,ppc,amd64,ia64 etc...
and has support for solaris as well.

This is nothing new...Companies have been doing this for over a year already now, this is nothing new. Look at Aduva for one example. It downloads, configures, builds, and installs the kernel of your choice for you, including all system-level distribution dependancies. We almost acquired them, that's how I know about their product when we were evaluating it for a potential acquisition.
I also wrote my own kernel HOWTO that thousands of people use daily. I've been doing kernels for almost a decade at over 400 a year, sometimes more. It surpasses the linuxdoc one in simplicity. It also uses an incredibly simple solution to the annoying "/usr/src/linux" being a real directory problem.
This is nothing new...

Somebody should inform Aunt Tillie about that
There is already a tool that does that, and a whole lot more called Aduva. Go check it out. ... -
Re:Licensing - This is not free software! It is worse then that. Read the following two clauses:
2.You may install the program yourself, but you must do so in accordance with Aduva's instructions. The Program is licensed, not sold. This license does not confer you title or ownership in the Program. The Program is not subject to any General Public License and is in whole or part the proprietary property of Aduva. You are specifically prohibited from reverse engineering the Program.
7.Confidentiality. All elements of the Program, the servers it attaches to, the manner of operation thereof, the code thereof and the information relating thereto are considered confidential information and you agree to maintain such information absolutely confidential and not to disclose such information to any third party whatsoever without first obtaining Aduva's prior written consent.
More (including a nasty termination clause) can be found on http://www.aduva.com/mason/new/licenses.html
