Re:Internet communities
They tried this in Utah... While I never had it, they got bought and shut down their service, now they sell the technology (http://www.airswitch.com/), I hear it was super fast, but their prices were outragous for basic features that come standard with DSL and cable, $50 for base service, $10 extra for 100 megabit local connection as opposed to 10 megabit - who cares, your internet speed will be exactly the same. It had some advantages such as games with other subscribers was great. I'm not sure if they used NAT or what (I know it was $20 more a month for a public IP), but you mentioned it, the problem I see with that is what happens when one or more person wants a specific port forwarded to them?

Re:It's been done
I have the 100Mb service mentioned in the previous post. It's called SwitchPoint (used to be called AirSwitch) and it's currently available in Springville and American Fork, UT.
It's basically a hacked version of Ethernet with whole town (most of it anyway) set up as giant switched LAN. Small pods connected to the backbone are located in each neighborhood. Each home using the service has a weatherproof CAT 5 Ethernet running from the pods to the house (usually underground). It's brought into the house just like a phone line and they install a wall jack inside your house. You get a static IP address and you're good to go. With the basic service you're limited to 500 MB per day, averaged over a seven period (ShoutCast streams will quickly get close to your quota if you're not careful). It was a pain to get them out install the whole thing, but dang it's fast! -
That's nothing. . . .
AirSwitch is better. . . . . if they actually provided service to anyone besides no-name towns like Springville.

Less than $50/mo in UT
A company in Utah has been deploying a fiber network for the past several years. Airswitch who just changed their name to Switchpoint is offering 100mb/s to residential customers for less than $50 per month.
Their web site ( www.airswitch.com ) is in transition, and doesn't have very much info on it right now. I remember in the past seeing that they are currently deployed in Springville and American Fork with Pleasant Grove and Orem coming online soon.
I also noticed that they just inked a deal with a company in Denver Colorado to offer service there.
People are chomping at the bit for this service. I wonder why more parts of the country aren't working faster on this.

Re:Sounds great.
And of course no, 0, that would be zip support for anything but Winders. Um, This sucks now for something that will be really cool once they get out to the rest of the world check out Air Switch . My manager has their service very fast about 2 to 3 meg and very low pings. Stuff like this is the future.

Check out airswitch.com
I have a working 10mbit connection direct to my house via Airswitch. They get "public utility" status with the city and then start stringing cable. I'm surprised more people don't do this. It's not 100 mbit but it beats ISDN, cable modems, and ASDL. www.airswitch.com
