    Not exactly automated, but there is a nice Photoshop plug-in called Image Doctor that makes the process faster than using the clone tool.

    If you are only using the images for textures, look into a plug-in for photoshop called Image Doctor made by AlienSkin

    They have a filter called JPEG repair that does a decent job of removing the artifacts. But only if the file resolution is not too high. Then it seems to choke.

    One word: Plugins.

    There's very little that distinguishes the base image-editing capability of Photoshop ($600) from Paint Shop Pro ($99) and the GIMP ($0). The main differences being good CYMK and colour-matching support (and, personally, I find the GIMP's interface an absolute pain to use).

    The range of different Photoshop plugins is what makes it what it is, and nobody's managed to beat it yet.
