Re:Having lived in both Germany and the US
Yeah, because Mexican signs look nothing like their American counterparts, and Americans who can't speak Spanish usually crash within 1 mile after crossing into Mexico. Granted, some signs don't look identical, but almost all of the important ones do, and it's a bit racist to assume they wouldn't attempt to learn what the others mean, just like you'd want to know what the signs meant in any foreign country you went to.
Also DUIs account for less than half of fatal accidents in the US, and 7% of total accidents. But maybe your definition of "most" is different from everybody else's. -
Re:And so it goesThe first thing that comes to mind is aftermarket products for cars which is probably a billion dollar industry. I do not have to pay Ford license fee to put a Fram filter, Monroe shocks, Michelin tires, Panasonic stereo, a Midwest Mustang hood scoop, BBS rims, a trailer hitch, a Vortech supercharger, larger after market fuel injectors, and a set of heads from some company in central Florida on my car. To even think that some licensing agreement with Ford should exist before hand 100% is completely insane.
And yet Harley Davidson is suing their aftermarket engine builders that they have had long standing relationships with!

Re:It could improve resource usage
yes, you're right. If you're connected properly, it's only 100 days in a minimum security prision. Link: http://www.ama-cycle.org/news/2004/janksent.asp

Too bad more Americans don't ride motorcycles
Want to alleviate traffic and save money without sacrificing the freedom and fun of your own vehicle?
Get a motorcycle!
Cheap liability insurance, great gas mileage, and in California you can legally split the lanes in gridlock traffic.
Sure, it's no good when there's white stuff on the ground, but no one said you have to sell your car/truck/suv. -

Re:Once again, Slashdot trumps logic for technologI believe more common than pressure sensors are magnetic induction coils that detect the presence of the metal in a vehicle. These can be buried back as far as appropriate, and I'd imagine they could also determine the speed of approaching vehicles.
While Googling for support on this point, I found this article, which mentions problems these induction coils (referred to as "wire loops" in the article) pose for motorcycles. So, like a pressure sensor, the induction sensor also need to be adjusted for smaller vehicles.
Completely off-topic to the main Slashdot article, but interesting nonetheless.

I think he meant the American Motorcycle Association (AMA)
