Re:speculating about the real purpose
That wouldn't explain why the counterfeit Cisco gear sucks so badly or why there are some parts and technological differences from the genuine stuff.
I work in telephony and when customer's DSPs fail the first quesion is if their stuff is genuine. We don't offer support until they replace them. They should have been smart enough to figure out an offer too good to be true probably isn't.

external pci-e is in the works and does not have the over head at Thunderbolt has and will not be Intel locked.

http://www.andovercg.com/datasheets/molex-74546-0813.pdfThunderbolt may be good for external HDD's and other high data stuff. But for PCI-e add in cards and video cards better to go with pci-e also the mac's with on board video have like 8-12 unused pci-e lanes any ways so why not run a video card off of them as 1 video card just maxes out the Thunderbolt bus and still does not let it hit it's full power. Maybe in 2013 you can have a mac mini with a good cpu and a pci-e box with a good video card in it.

Fake Cisco
There is a fairly large amount of counterfeit Cisco gear floating around

And we all know where this stuff is made.
OTOH we just bought a huge pile of new Juniper stuff at work, every single piece "Made in China".

They aren't the same
RTFA below, the gear isn't the same, and do not use all the same parts and process which leads to the fakes having a higher failure rate. These probably aren't being produced in the same factory as the genuine gear, but probably a near by one that has contacts in the real factory to supply the plans etc.

Another 1/2 hour wasted, even though I don't even know what that card is for -
Re:"Counterfeit" not an issue...Clearly these two boards are not from the same manufacturing line. There more detailed photos here.
IMHO the extent of differences they are talking about (The brand mark on the RJ-45 connector, the font of the barcode sticker, and suchlike) could easily be explained by a completely normal mid-production change in suppliers. I would say it is far from clear that the two boards are not from the same manufacturing line. Indeed, it would be hard to make two such identical boards without the original CAD data.
Just my $0.02 -
Re:Makes one wonder ...
Yets its really counterfeit. I got a couple of T1 cards off ebay that were counterfeit. The parts work, but they don't fit quite right...take some extra effort to insert and remove). You can also tell by looking: http://www.andovercg.com/services/cisco-counterfeit-wic-1dsu-t1.shtml And while both counterfeits did work, one died within about a month. The other may still work but I dunno cause I replaced them both with two real cisco cards.
