Re:Get on Freenet ?
freenet exemplifies what a peer-to-peer internet would be like: a disaster. It's slow, it's cumbersome, and more to the point, it fails to solve a problem a doesn't really exist in the first place. Nobody cares about anonymity at the EXPENSE of speed and convenience, except child pornographers, law breakers, and the paranoid. That's why networks like freenet and ZeroKnowledge ultimately fail.
That's not to say freenet not an interesting experiment. That's not to say anonymity isn't desireable. but please, anyone that's tried it knows it's not a panacea. If you're really paranoid, use a proxy like anonycat, or any of the zillion others. They are more than adequate. -
Re:I like Firefox for this...
Having firefox popup a dialogue for each and every cookie is a major pain in the ass.
I surf using a web proxy,
anonycat
that way, you don't ever get ANY cookies, but you can still visit/use all the sites. -
Re:Cookies off by default
it sounds like it would be a lot easier for you to surf with an anonymizer like anonycat.
That way, you avoid ALL cookies, but don't have to give up sites that requires them to work. -
Re:Such hypocrisy.
a few days ago I submitted a story about anonycat.com, which is an open source anonymous surfing proxy that you CAN read slashdot with (plus you don't even have to download it if you dont want) and it was rejected in favour of a story about Google finding a new way to take a sh#t. oh WELL!
and BTW anonycat need a few good mirrors, if any slashdotters are interested. -
Tor is ok, but
if you want to surf anonymously without downloading and installing stuff, check out anonycat.
http://anonycat.com/
it's open source, so you can download and run it from your own computer if you want, but you can also just surfy anonymously from the main page.
it's pretty good for viewing slashdot, too, which you can't do with Tor. -
Re:Internet Access
Presumably this is a reference for them in case you do something naughty online, which wouldn't still be required under the anonymous borrowing.
Besdies, if you wanted to surf with anonymity, you could go here:
http://anonycat.com/
That's a plug for my site, which just went online today. the anonymizing classes are free/open source. -
Re:Would make porn filtering a LOT easier
Btw, look at what prohibition did to drinking in US. I just hope some kid in some corner of the world learns C and assembly just to hack through the school proxy to browse pr0n. Talk about incentive !!.
yes... they *could* learn C and assembler. Or they could just visit an anonymizer site like http://anonycat.com/ and be done with it.
