Post links to online sources of personal dataLet's have a thread here of nothing but links to places you can get personal data for free online. I'll start us off:

Where's the "bad" part here?I don't see how this is a "bad idea." I've long felt it unfair that companies can simply take other databases and make them available publicly (such as anybirthday.com) and make money off it. An organization that puts significant work into compiling a database should be entitled to the same level of copyright protection as an organization creating any other work.
This law would simply close a legal loophole that prevented the application of copyright law to databases composed of "facts"--which currently cannot be copyrighted and are automatically forced into the public domain. Isn't it better to give the publishers of such databases a choice?

Re:Yeah, but...
How in the world is your DOB hard to get? I can run a $39.95 report on you on the internet and get that plus your last 3 addresses, phone numbers and employers.
Too rich for me man. For free, go to this site and enter a combination of first, last and zip (or portions of these) and get first name, middle init, last name, DOB and zipcode. If that's not enough, pay $29 PER YEAR!! and get all that plus address for as many searches as you want. It's too rediculously easy to get this info!
BTW, if you go to the FAQ, then privacy statement from there, then click the opt out link, you can fill out a form... afterwards, they will promptly NOT remove you. At least they haven't removed me yet after submitting the form 3 times over as many months. I even followed the "If you still have problems..." info they give and e-mailed their opt-out address asking to be removed. (I did use a temp mail account in case they are culling addresses for spammers.)

Re:Here's a scary database . . .
Pretty interesting! George Tenet (DCI) is listed. Donald Rumsfeld is listed. Wonder who else is (tried Ashcroft, no luck).

Privacy?I recently tracked down an old friend who's never even been near the internet using these sites:
Black Book Online (love that warning!)
While I thought it was cool that I could track someone down, sites like AnyBirthday.com bother me because they reveal very personal information. (Oh yeah, you can opt out, but, only if you have access to the net and know about the site to begin with.)

Too late to opt out?
An interesting thing to do next time you register software or give information to a web site is to misspell your name slightly and keep a record of how it was misspelled. Make a list of variations and which site you submitted to. In a few weeks/months when you get junk mail addressed to you with a variation of your misspelled name, you will know which site is giving away your info to others. Probably a good reason to NEVER give out your real info ever again unless absolutely necessary.
Bored? You can spend hours at Nedsite looking for info on yourself and long lost buddies. I imagine trying to opt out of being in all these different databases would take more effort than it's worth. Might as well get used to the idea that there will always be ways for people to find you on the net if they know how/where to search. People in certain professions don't even have an option of opting out - take a look at Lawyer Search or Doctor Search. I also wonder where these guys: Birthday Search got their data from.
Information is indeed begging to be set free - including your own.
