Apache 2.0.42 Released
i-got-a-long-name writes "The Apache HTTP Server Project is proud to announce the fifth public release of Apache 2.0. This is primarily a bug-fix release, including updates to the experimental caching module, the removal of several memory leaks, and fixes for several segfaults, one of which could have been used as a denial-of-service against mod_dav. A complete list of the changes since 2.0.40 are available.". Just keep in mind that if you upgrade be prepared to recompile all of your modules since binary-compatibility is no longer the case. Which I am sure will help with the adoption rate. -
Linux/Apache Wins TCO Survey
cant_get_a_good_nick writes "From this week's Apacheweek comes a link to a white paper discussing Total Cost of Ownership for Linux in the Enterprise. Some very good hard numbers here, although as always, YMMV. It shows that even with "expensive UNIX admins" having to switch over costs to a "new UNIX", admin costs are lower than for Windows or Solaris. Some great quotes too, I can see these plastered in posts for weeks to come. I wish they could have included FreeBSD in the survey, but all in all interesting." -
Happy Birthday Code Red
totallygeek writes: "One year ago today (July 19, 2001), more than 359,000 computers were infected with the Code Red worm in less than 14 hours. At the peak of infection, more than 2,000 new machines were infected each minute. Servers running Internet Information Services from Microsoft were propagating this worm across the Internet faster than anything has up to then or since. For the first time, systems running the Apache web server were getting requests for a document called "default.ida". Here we are a year later, and my web log shows an average of forty-two requests per day for default.ida over the last five days. To really appreciate the spread of this program, look at this animated image." -

The Effects Of The ApachePDA Aprils Fools' Gag
Anonymous Coward writes: "/. gets an honourable mention in the current issue of Apacheweek. Admitting that ApachePDA was an April Fool's joke, Apacheweek says the gag snowballed beyond expectation when the story was posted on /. and the alleged PDA took 80000 hits in two hours. The good news is that Apacheweek claims a PalmOS web server port is already in the works and Perl has already been ported. The article is at link " Also noted in ApacheWeek is the article in PC Week where it's stated that "neither PC Week Labs nor Sun recommends its (Apache's) use in high-transaction environments". Then again, PC Week themselves run Apache. Hmmmmm. -
Apache Ported to PalmOS
ApachePDA writes, "Apache Week includes an announcement of the first alpha release of Apache ported to the Palm Pilot. The ApachePDA project is looking for developers to help port other modules. The server looks pretty neat according to the screenshots, but seems to have some serious functionality missing. " Next step: the TI-85 port. And, BTW, you might want to check the date of the page it links to. ;) -

Internet World on Open Source
John Hartnup writes " Apache Week links to this article about blueprints for Netscape-as-Open-Source. I thought you'd like to know, since it uses Linux as a case study, but falls over itself to find disadvantages, without mentioning many of the advantages... in fact the worst thing they can say about Linux is that there are two versions of Emacs!! A king among non-seqs..." Terrible. two versions of Emacs. How terrible it must be to have a choice.
