Re:Apple ][ used keypress timing seeds
That's not how it worked in applesoft -- are you talking about an application or Integer basic? If it was integer, than that would fit Woz's style (and PRNs in applesoft would fit Bill Gate's).
One neat program that I wrote converted the disk drive read byte to a sound - you could definately hear the difference between a disk in the drive and the door open. Even with a formatted disk, I think you'd still get somewhat random numbers because the data between sectors wasn't synchronized. I don't know if anyone used this for random numbers, though.
Incidently, linux does use inter-key timing (among many other things) for randomness. -
GNO's Not Orca
Well, what's this.. looks like someone has stumbled across some 7 year old webpages!
One should note that the GNO/ME distribution does not include GS/TCP. Indeed try Marinetti if you want to play around with TCP/IP on your GS.
GNO/ME stands for GNO's Not Orca.. named after the Orca shell in which you could use their compiler tools..
Not really worth checking out, unless it brings back that special nostalgia if you're one of the few who actually used this software 10 years ago.
I don't think I saw a link to www.gno.org so there it is, go grab your GNO! You can find download links if you like..

Not the only TCP/IP stack for the IIgs
Any reason there's no mention of marinetti in this article? Marinetti implements a TCP/IP stack for the IIgs, but works under the IIgs' native interface, GS/OS. There's telnet, ftp, AIM, and email apps already, and even the beginnings of a *graphical* web browser for it. And yes, it's open source as well.

Re:Apple II loads faster than todays machines
Anyone know the status of the GS/Unix software? Haven't heard about it in years but the last thing I found said it went open source, problem is getting the thing networked, anyone with an Appletalk/Ethernet adapter for cheap?
GNO/ME 2.0 Information
Marinetti 2.0.1 TCP/IP stack for the AppleIIgs
GS/TCP TCP/IP using SLIP or macIP -
It is possible!
Well with an Apple IIgs anyway. There is a TCP/IP stack for its OS. Somebody even developed an ethernet card for the machine! Expensive but pretty cool. Just imagine chatting to people via AIM from your 15 year old Apple II hooked up to your broadband internet connection.

Re:naming conventions rock
At my school, they are using S/F ship names (Enterprise, Voyager, Capricorn, etc.
I've named my home machines after characters on Voyager:
- Janeway--K6-2-300 (o/c 333) that dual-boots Win98 and Linux and is my main "workstation"
- Chakotay--P5-133 (o/c 166) Linux server providing Internet access
- Paris--P5-90 (o/c 100) NetWare 5 server, not doing much that's useful yet
- Neelix--K6-200 Win98 "entertainment system" for playing DVDs, MP3s, and CDs (parked under a 20" TV instead of a monitor)
- Seven--P5-166 notebook (with a cracked screen, unfortunately) running Win98
I had a name for my Apple IIGS for a while, too, but I haven't had need to bring up Marinetti in a while, so it normally doesn't participate in the home network at this time. (It does have a null-modem link to Chakotay, through which it can be used as a dumb terminal.)
The domain for all of 'em, of course, is ncc74656.org.
