tons of them
At the ICS West security conference last year, there were dozens of vendors showing Linux based DVR security systems. Some were even just their capture card and an IDE dongle containing the entire Linux OS and their DVR application. Just put it in a system with an existing HD on the secondary IDE bus and you'll soon be running a Linux based DVR. Most were advertising "embedded OS" and higher reliability than PC( Windows ) based DVRs.
I had put together a list a couple of years ago and will post them here. you'll be better served by also google'ing for yourself and filtering out the Virus prone models.

ICS West is April 5-7th so I'd be putting in a request for a trip to Las Vegas if I were you. ;-)

Reccomended model Southwestern Bell GH3028NB
It looks quite similar to this but is bronze colored. It was fairly inexpensive and it was purchased at Lowes. It was initially bought for my house by someone who knew nothing about computers and I gasped when I saw the 2.4ghz logo on the box. Amazingly, it has not affected my wireless setup one bit. I can sit 1 inch away from the phone with my laptop and my connectivity never drops nor does my speed. If I am on the phone and move near my WAP or laptop occasionally I'll hear a click every once in a while but the person on the other end never hears it.

Re:Now see, this is a LITTLE off topic
I searched google a bit.
Did not find the exact thing - cant remember the name of it. But came across this small guy. It is somewhat pricey, but i am sure you can find cheaper versions given enough time. I dont know if you can get much smaller without going to Pentium 2 or lower class machines. -
Re:Its too big!!!
There are some really freakin' cool rack-mount LCD displays on the market... Very pricey, though.

Malata is king!
As far as I can tell, Malata is the king of codefree DVD players. The N996 is completely region-free, is progressive scan, has a built-in PAL-NTSC converter (and vice-versa), built in Dolby Digital decoder, and is tweakable beyond belief. On the other hand, I recently bought a Philips 712 that is remotely hackable (like the legendary Apex) for $179, and am quite happy with it. Check out www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk for lots of good info.
