Re:The message this sends me
Every time I hear "hardware accelerated" associated with the browser, I feel as though they have essentially given up trying to unbloat their browser and operating system so they are trying to make up for it by pushing off such tasks to the hardware.
... Other browsers get by just fine without hardware acceleration. So fine, indeed, that Safari has already added it, and Firefox, Chrome and Opera are all scrambling to implement it.
Seriously, have you even seen the demos? It's not about "needs acceleration to be as fast as other browsers" at all. It's about "5-10x faster than browsers without acceleration".

Re:Opera
Others have answered this already but I'll reply to you personally. Opera scales its memory usage to the machine it is running on. I currently have it on a machine with 512 MB or RAM and it only sips a little less than 40 MB of RAM (38,412 KB and not moving as I type this) with four tabs open and reloading one of the tabs every 15 minutes since over a week now.
One other person posted this link, which explains one way Opera adapts itself: http://avencius.nl/content/firefox-3-vs-opera-95-memory-usage-take-2

Invalid bechmark
I am sure that this is true for all of the browsers, but in Opera's case...
The machine has 4GB in question and Opera is set to "automatic" for the memory cache (default). According to this article, this instructs Opera to use up to ~10% of the system memory. This is quite tunable based on the environment, so one could easily optimize for a low-end machine and have satasfactory performance. The browser using the memory effectively is the more interesting test, which this benchmark fails to determine. An interesting detail in the graphs is how sharp the memory reclaim cycles are, where the smoother indicates better memory management. The graphs indicate that Opera does a good job in this regard.

Re:So Opera web browser now runs as a system servi
Firefox 2 had a bug. Firefox 3 does use less than Opera. Much less. (I'll admit these benchmarks aren't for the latest build of Opera, but Opera has more features now not less so i think it's still accurate).

Re:So Opera web browser now runs as a system servi
That's not true in any sense. Current version of Firefox is ~7MB, Opera is ~10MB in size.
Ever since version 3 of Firefox it's been one of the most misely in memory usage. It beats older versions of Opera by a long way (no benchmarks yet for Unite but i don't think it's better than the older versions).

Re:Firefox is a pig
Because everyone already knows that Firefox is a bloated pig, and that Opera is much leaner.
ff3 generally uses quite a bit less memory than opera9.5.
Google finds many benchmarks, but to pick one: http://avencius.nl/content/firefox-3-vs-opera-95-memory-usage-take-2

Re:What astonishes me...
FF loads pages faster than opera or IE. And it doesnt have a memory leak. Some addons might i dont know. Take this, I leave my computer on for several months at a time including FF open. I often use multiple windows (currently have 2FF windows up) and always a decent number of tabs (8 and 4). This computer has 256MB of ram and has never brought the system to its knees. Also I use 6 addons. If there were a memory leak i'd have noticed. That and a nice variety of tests, in speed and ram usage have shown FF to beat Opera and IE (last i checked, opera has likely improved lately to keep up). Please don't slander without showing your information.
