Coincidentily
I just posted an article that's been sitting around on my hard disk for awhile now (I'm testing out nanoblogger). It's about how I'd improve LAMP, but it ended up becoming an advertisement for FreeBSD.
Have a look if you can stand an honest critique of Linux (I love and run Linux on everything, so don't accuse me of FreeBSD shilling).

To Michael:
You are so full of yourself, I don't know where to start.
Try this: leave your firewall disabled for the weekend. Can you sleep easily at night? If not, then you have problems.
So if I leave my doors unlocked in a mall parking lot at night, I should be able to sleep at night?
Identify a given component that's currently running. Any process at all. Do you understand exactly what it does? All of its inputs and outputs? How does it react to unexpected inputs or other circumstances?
This explains it.. you have so little of a life, that you perform QA for every program on your system. How ludicrous.
If something like Windows plays any part at all in your system design, you should probably give up now...holes are discovered constantly.
Why not take your own advice and subscribe to Bugtraq? Maybe you'll learn that other OSes are have "holes that are discovered constantly".
It should be a crime to teach people C/C++.
Is this why all but one of your projects are written in C?
High level languages are usually more secure than C/C++
WTF? C/C++ is a high-level language. Have you never programmed Assembly? Java is not that much higher on the evolutionary chain than C++.
[The speed of C/C++] isn't even worth arguing and the fact that you said something like that calls your skills into question.
Really? So whenever a good point is brought up, you just use ad ignorum? Just reading your entire paper brings your skills into question.
Okay, okay.. I'll give you one thing..
The only logical conclusion here is that I'm a perfectionist crackpot doom-sayer idiot
I completely agree. -
Re:What hubris. This "technologist" is carrying on about bad programmers and security? Wow - I assume he's a seasoned professional with many large-scale projects under his belt?
Here is his professional experience on projects. You can actually see his code and the depth of his work is not at all impressive.

Who the f*ck is this guy, anyway?Surf to his web site, and it's just the same old self-absorbed bullshit that so many other people put up.
Qualifications?
Let's see...
- I was born on August 28th 1980, 4PM in Long Island.
- My life was pretty aimless until I broke my arm in the 8th grade, keeping me from most sports and physical activity. That's when I discovered the magic of computers. I haven't stopped poking them since.
- My chief interest is in information science (ie, computers). This interest involves my day job, my business, and most of my recreational activity.
Wow! Pretty exceptional, don't you think?
'bout the only thing going for the guy is he *doesn't* have a blog...
How the f*ck did this nonsense get put up on
/. anyway? What changed hands to get this deal done?

Re:Still Some Roads to Conquer
Maybe this is why MySQL isn't as popular for database(for things other then a website)?
If you are a real DBA, then having to use a SQL console or command line tools to administrate a database shouldn't be a problem. If you need to point and click to make a backup or create tables because SQL is too hard, then there is no way you can be a DBA. Besides, there is a good web based GUI, phpMyAdmin, that lets you do most things without knowing everything about SQL. There are also GUI interfaces to MySQL.
Also, PHP more popular then ASP? Possibly. But name anyone who makes money running a huge website (Slashdot excluded, they don't make money) with MySQL. There may be some, but anyone who is doing serious business isn't going to be using MySQL.
That's complete FUD. Say, do you work for Microsoft or Oracle? I can say first hand that directNIC.com uses MySQL for everything. They are a very popular domain registrar (sold over half a million domains) and are certainly making money. Many other companies use MySQL and not just for running websites. You should rethink your myths.
Fantastic is such a subjective word. Let's just say they are good.
Apache is obviously not fantastic (see my previous posts for why I think that), but it works well for many people. PHP is a good and I personally really enjoy using it, but I certainly wouldn't call it fantastic, mainly due to its quirks and because the developers refuse to fix certain bugs. MySQL is fantastic. It is easy to use and does what it is designed to do very well. -
Re:LAMP
Oh and here is Michael's picture too. Thank you for sharing that with us and DO try and work out that little problem.

Supplemental reading
The ZDNet article is missing the link to my original article which is what lead the news.com writer to interview me.
I can see why they left it out though, it calls a lot of the people they interviewed in addition to me names.

Destroying the telemarketing industry.
See this page for a method that would surely destroy the telemarketing industry if enough companies did it.

AMD myths debunked
The exciting sequel to MySQL Myths Debunked is AMD Myths Debunked! Laugh, cry, maybe share your experiences?
All of the people that shared their experiences with MySQL helped turn that document into a very useful weapon against nuisance naysayers. I'm hoping the same will happen for AMD.

Give vtwm a try..
I never used to realize how constrained working with the desktop metaphor felt until I played with vtwm.
The big distinguishing feature of vtwm is how it implements virtual desktops. Unlike most virtual desktops in other UNIX window managers, this one can be of arbitrary size and you can scroll through it freely, instead of one chunk at a time.
I have vtwm set up so that the top 90% of the screen or so can be the "focused" area of the desktop, and the bottom 10% represents the entire virtual desktop, with boxes that represent where your windows are.
A blue box on the virtual desktop bar represents what the screen is currently focused on. You can either slide the blue box over to other windows, or pick windows up and move them into view.
You never feel cramped, and things like iconification are obviated. Simply move to a different part of the desktop if you need space. Also comes in very handy if you're at work and looking at porn and the boss comes by. Just click on the portion of the desktop that contains all of your busywork.
Here's a screenshot [if you see nothing but pitch black, scroll to the bottom right] to better illustrate my setup. The screen is right-center, and the gimp's toolbar is off further to the right off screen which is how I took the screenshot.
It's amazing how restricted I feel sitting at a windows box now, or with a window manager that doesn't support this. It's also great if you want to show how much of a badass you are, since with no windows open, the screen is entirely black, except for a thin white horizontal line at the bottom and a blue box beneath it.

Re:Who cares about MySQL??
At all. If you use MySQL for anything more than a teenage girl's weblog, you're asking for trouble the first time your CPU spikes.
Better go inform Yahoo that all of their unscheduled downtime is a direct result from using technology that can only power a teenager's weblog.
We use MySQL because it's stable, fast, easy to use, and doesn't cost us a ridiculous amount of money to run. We've seen one of our systems scale up from 0 queries/sec to 1200 queries/sec on x86.
Statements like this poster's are so frustratingly inaccurate that I've written a paper on dispelling these stupid myths. People can and do and ENJOY getting work done with MySQL. Don't succumb to senseless prejudices.
