I'm part of the team that run banniNation.com which is a news aggregation site with a fairly similar model to slashhdot.

While we haven't been officially served, our site and business are listed in the original complaint along with the handle of a user who mentioned Mr. Rakofsky.

We've got an official statement of sort at http://www.bannination.com/s/lawsuit and there's a link from there to a very level headed discussion about it. This definitely doesn't just affect bloggers and has further implications around the right to anonymous speech and the liability of service providers.

No, he has a point. Bannination is mostly fark ex-pats. Some banned, some not. But moderation at bannination is crowd based and rarely utilized. Nothing legal is verboten. Try that on Fark.

That's because they didn't want to risk being associated with BanniNation (bN).

On the other hand, slashdot would probably be a pretty good model for democracy (when the admins will lose the veto power on what makes first page, at least).

That site is unintentionally hilarious. Some dude is whining about being shadowbanned for talking about Bannination, which seems like a site for fark trolls. His user name was RatFucker. RatFucker. Jesus Christ.

Done further with http://www.bannination.com/ which is more of a true fork, being that it covers the 'wierd news' angle along with the NSFWork content.

If we're not careful, bannination.com will go and trademark hurrr. Pandora's box indeed.

Really... is there anything remarkable about the source code that runs sites like fark or slashdot. I hand-rolled my own similar aggregator in a few days and it's evident that the users make the community and not the software.

Short of collecting personal information, I can't see what value is there.

Interesting they rate down the comments pages on bannination.com because they have stylesheets outside the document head, yet why i look at the code the stylesheets are where they are supposed to be... weird.

Don't bother. Bypass their sneaky censorship and Stanford-prison-experiment-level moderation, and go straight to the better source: banniNation.

The current place to go instead of Fark is http://bannination.com - A site created and populated by folks who were fed up with the shadowbanning, catering to the advertiser's whims and other assorted bullshit that was starting to pollute Fark. Bannination also has a lot of features that completely outshines how things are done on Fark with the best features from many of the common news aggrigator sites... plus a few nice unique twists as well.

There's at least one alternative.

It's BanniNation Formed by a number of posters from fark who had finally had it with the way Drew runs Fark. It's a user-moderated fark-ish site, and IMO, has a much better community feel than fark does. It's nice being able to discuss a topic without worrying about the banstick coming down on your head.
