Banshee
I'm a bit late in replying to it, but has anyone banshee yet? http://banshee.fm/about/

Re:Cross language - what .Net gets right
Believe it or not, CIL (or MSIL in Microsoft-speak), the bytecode for
.NET, is an ECMA standard, and implementations of both .NET JIT'ers and standard libraries exist for practically all modern platforms, thanks to Mono. So I'd say: "competition for portable applications". Really! Just take a look at Gtk#. As a result, there are numerous applications for Linux written in .NET languages (e.g., Banshee). Having written huge amounts of code in both JVM languages (Java, Scala, JRuby, and Clojure) and .NET languages (F# and C#), I would take .NET over the JVM for a new project any day.
Also, to pre-emptively swat down this counter-argument: while the Mono people and Microsoft may have had some animosity in the past, it is most definitely not the case any more. Most of the Mono people I have spoken to (yes, in person) say that their relationship with Microsoft is pretty good.
Build systems and dependency management for the JVM are their own mini-nightmare. .NET's approach isn't perfect but compared to [shudder] Ant, Maven, Buildr, SBT, and on and on and on... it largely just works. -
Re:Kids argue over 3,41
You are right of course, and I know it's not a metric. But if Mint's popularity was even remotely comparable to Ubuntu, I would expect more than $3.41 even if a very small percentage uses Banshee to buy. I mean, Banshee claims $9,215 overall raised for the GNOME Foundation. http://banshee.fm/about/revenue/

Re:Find a better case for the discussion
This has EVERYTHING to do with software freedom. Per the GPL what they are required to do once they make their change to the affiliate link is make the source code available.
Not arguing your point, but it should be noted that Banshee is released under the MIT/X11 license and not the GPL. In fact, the MIT/X11 is more permissive in that someone could take the Banshee source code, modify it, and release it in binary form only without even contributing one iota of code back to the OSS community. So if the developers release their code under such permissive license, they shouldn't have any qualms about someone monetizing their work.

Re:What the hell?
Uninstall banshee and install any of the other players if you don't like it. The mp3 purchase thingie is fairly small and non-intrusive in any case.
Or... Uninstall banshee & reinstall banshee (the one the Banshee devs maintain, instead of the Canonical devs).
I don't know if the Banshee-Team PPA for Ubuntu will have the Hijacked affiliate link or not, but you could always just compile & install it from source.

How much money are we looking at here? The banshee website say in 6 months they raised $3,077.00 through Amazon. http://banshee.fm/about/revenue/
The average Linux user doesn't pay for digital music.
If canonical is begrudging GNOME a few thousand dollars, i'd say they have some serious sustainability issues. If canonical wanted to hire a single dev it would definitely cost them more than than any Amazon store revenues.
