Re:AT&T doing same but here's the opt-out link
Wrong-O
Updating my hosts file is the first thing I do after I root.

overstate things much?
MUCH more importantly, though, ads are draining your BANDWIDTH. It's important, because it's also a simple demonstrable harm. If you pay $30 per month for your internet bandwidth, and the ads use up half of it (conservative estimate)
In which universe do you live where ads on a webpage total up to half of the bandwidth to deliver said webpage?
Because Google purposely don't allow you to block the ads in android (*)
They don't make it easy but they don't make it all that difficult either. Buy a Nexus, Developer Edition, or one of the multitude of carrier branded phones that are rootable. Install one of the multitude of ad blocking apps that are available, AdFree being my personal favorite. Problem solved.

You have ads on your Android device?
Why?

Re:Apple made the same mistake
Who the hell actually sees online ads anymore? Good gravy, AC, you have options.

Re:Pay by phone apps require outrageous permission
Replace android with cyanogenmod. You can then install these apps, and selectively retract such permissions. So you can deny the app access to camera & contacts. Maybe it'll work anyway, but it won't be able to spy on you.
I used to do this with Cyanogenmod on my OG Droid. It worked well.
On my Droid 4 with much later builds of Cyanogenmod, I can no longer find this functionality.
Where is it?
Another great use is to retract internet permissions for games like angry birds. That way, no more ads . .
.A better way to get rid of ads is Adfree Android (it used to be on the Market/Play Store, but Google decided it was bad for business).
(Cue apk and an obligatory hosts file rant, since this is both a hosts file hack AND an apk...)

Re:Whoops....
What ads? I don't know what you're talking about.
Of course, my device is rooted - and I claim it's irresponsible for carriers to try to prevent users from doing such.
