Porting Aquaria To the PSP
Apple Prophet writes "Just a few short weeks after BitBlot released the source to Aquaria as part of the Humble Indie Bundle, Andrew Church hacked up an ambitious homebrew port of the game to the PSP. He wrote a detailed synopsis of the technical challenges in an article on the Wolfire Blog, and of course, contributed all of the patches back to the project so anyone with a homebrew-equipped PSP can try it out. Check out the mercurial repository for the source." -
Aquaria Goes Open Source
A post on the Wolfire blog yesterday announced that the source code for Aquaria has now been released. Aquaria, an action-adventure, underwater sidescroller from Bit Blot, was part of the Humble Indie Bundle, which was so successful that the developers of four games pledged to release them as open source. This marks the final release, following Lugaru, Gish, and Penumbra: Overture. The source code is available from a Mercurial repository. -
Game Developer / Indie Game Award Winners
Last night, past the red carpet, under the swirling light and through thrumming bass, the Game Developer's Choice Awards and Independent Game Festival awards were handed out in front of an audience of some 3,500 people. The evening went by very quickly, for a nice change of pace, with few speeches lasting longer than 30 seconds or so. There was a marriage proposal (accepted), several humorous skits that were actually funny, and several moments of Shigeru Miyamoto awesomeness. The big winners of the night were Gears of War, which walked away with three GDCAs, and Aquaria, which won the Seamus McNally grand prize from the IGF. Later today Gamespot is going to be airing video of the awards, a first for the event. While there may not be much in the IGF event that captures your interest, definitely check out the GDCAs. The acceptance speeches from Greg Costikyan, The Fatman, Shigeru Miyamoto, and CliffyB should not be missed. -
2007 IGF Finalists Announced
Gamasutra has the listing of the finalists for the 2007 Independent Games Festival. The 9th year of the event saw a strong turnout for contenders, with 141 entries into the field. From the article: "Nominations are led by Bit Blot's dreamlike, innovatively controlled 2D underwater adventure title Aquaria , which garnered 4 nominations, including one for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize. According to a statement: 'Other Grand Prize nominees included Queasy Games' cleverly designed abstract shoot-em-up, Everyday Shooter , which grabbed 3 nominations in total — nominees for the top prize were rounded out by Peter Stock's intelligently complex physics puzzle game Armadillo Run /a>, Three Rings' Wild West indie strategy MMO Bang! Howdy , and Naked Sky's Xbox Live Arcade action-puzzler RoboBlitz ." In the interests of full disclosure, I was a judge for the first round of voting this year.
