Virtual World Currency Exchange Launches
Thanks to Terra Nova for the news that a MMO currency exchange website now allows cross-trading of virtual world currency, meaning you can trade your Ultima Online gold directly for simoleans from The Sims Online. Terra Nova notes that the site, the Gaming Open Market, "plans to cover [currency for] Ultima, Sims Online, There, EverQuest, Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies... and of course the US dollar." The FAQ page on GOM's site explains that "...in-game commodity transactions are handled by meeting a GOM representative (called an "associate") in your game", and explains the service's alleged advantages: "the GOM Currency Exchange (GCX) gives you the speed of a real-life discount stock brokerage, and provides the security of an escrow service, while bringing together buyers and sellers of common goods." -
Earth Fires Destabilize Virtual Governments
Thanks to Terra Nova for their article pointing out that Sony Online's virtual worlds are missing their customer service, "...due to the wild fires raging throughout San Diego and the proximity of those fires to the SOE offices. Normal operations will resume once this local emergency is over." Edward Castronova comments: "In other words, a firestorm has knocked out the government that rules over 750,000 accounts", and suggests: "We tend to think of synthetic worlds as decentralized because the users are spread over the globe. They are still highly centralized on the production side, however, a state of affairs with clear implications for the relationship of synthetic worlds not only to Earth's weather, but to its politics as well." -
Gender-Bending In Online Games Investigated
Thanks to Terra Nova for their article discussing the prevalence of gender-bending in online RPGs. According to statistics worked out in the piece, "[in EverQuest], every 1 out of 2 or 3 female characters is being played by a male player, while every 1 out of 100 male characters is being played by a female player." The article also notes that, according to the statistics, "The demographic that is most likely to gender-bend is not male teenagers, but men over the age of 25", suggesting one reason for this might be that "younger male players are probably less secure about their own gender identity." -
On Interpersonal Compatibility In MMORPGs
Thanks to Terranova for their post discussing how MMORPG players are pre-selected for relationship compatibility. The post references a specific part of a larger survey on relationships in MMO titles that points out that "MMORPG is a highly specific kind of entertainment... [which] effectively attracts people with similar interests and attitudes", referencing stats such as: "MMORPG players who are employed tend to work in the IT industry (36% of employed EQ players.)" It also points out that these relationships evolve in a very different way: "People like to share personal details online and you only learn the mundane details when you meet them in real life." -
Shadowbane World Closure Due To Counterfeiting?
Thanks to Terra Nova for their posting discussing world deletions/consolidations in the PC MMORPG Shadowbane, analyzing rumors that the measures are "a fairly sophisticated attempt to clean the bad gold out of the economy." The piece informs: "The official reason [for closure] seems to be the fact that populations are too low", but it's pointed out that "...those being booted from SB's Scorn and Treachery servers are leaving with nothing but the clothes on their back: no bank items, no coins, no property", a drastic step which some say is down to the fact that "...much of the gold in [Shadowbane's] worlds is duped rather than earned." Is this a simple world consolidation, or desperate economy-balancing measures?
