Re:bitcoin isn't real, either
Money has three primary functions, a unit of account, a store of value and a medium of exchange. Your examples only function as a very limited medium of exchange, they do not provide a way to store value and they certainly can't be used sensibly as a unit of account. The volatility of Bitcoin is neither here nor there when using it as a medium of exchange, but it is most definitely a relevant consideration if you are using it as a store of value or unit of account. Here's a little primer on what money actually is: https://www.boundless.com/busi...

Re:Why is Slashdot anti-trade?
From your own link:
"Edward Alden, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, says anxiety over trade deals has grown because wages haven’t kept pace with labor productivity while income inequality has risen. To some extent, he says, trade deals have hastened the pace of these changes".
The fact that "most estimates conclude that the deal had a modest but positive impact on U.S. GDP of less than 0.5 percent" (from your link) is largely irrelevant when most people do not get to see the benefits. Indeed, median American income has been shrinking since the late 1990s (when adjusted for inflation) even while the mean has increased.
Don't get me wrong. I'm one of the people who has done well out of the whole arrangement. But I totally appreciate others have not and are angry about it.

Re:I don't understand..
What makes you think TIR isn't possible with a hollow core? TIR works because of the change in index of refraction, that happens between air and glass just as much as glass and plastic.

Re: Tough luck..
Depends on the concentration and distance. It has a 33yr half life. So every 33yrs half of its mass decayed from the previous 33yr.
Cobalt 60 has a half life of 5.3 years. That makes it a rather active radionuclide. The decay from Co60 emits beta and gamma radiation, resulting in Ni60.
Since the density of nickel is hardly zero, the mass of a cobalt 60 source doesn't not decay by 50% in one half life, two half lives, or five. The amount of Co60 does decrease.

Re:Rock Solid
They're made by Boundless Technologies these days. Frankly the new ones don't seem are reliable as the old Digital manufactured ones though.

Re:When in Rome
It seems that even if the interfaces are very similar, if there's even a slight difference in the look and feel about it (and as soon as there is *ANY* change) there is a need for training. I know from experience that moving from a dumb terminal environment (SunRiver terminals) to Win95 workstations for a nationwide company required a LOT of training. Surprisingly, whenever an icon was added to the desktop there was an outbreak of confusion and mass hysteria, and more training was required.

Re:Iopener? BookPC?
Along the same lines...Virgin's Webplayer. They go for $150 to $200 on eBay these days, but an enterprising person put together a coop to bulk order surplus and returned units for Boundless. We ended up ordering almost 400 Webplayers together, and Boundless set the price at $100 each. That opportunity is over, but only time, energy and willingness is stopping anyone else from putting together another order.
People are doing all sorts of different things with them. I'm sure someone is making an X-term.
