Boycott Caller-ID for E-mail
The site Boycott Caller-ID for E-mail has been saying this for a very long time. Since the merging of SPF and Caller-ID into Sender-ID it's been getting a bit out-of-date, but the patent issues are still valid.
-
Have the patent issues been resolved? The original SPF is, to my knowledge, clear of software patent problems. BUT Microsoft has quite publicly stated that they're pursuing patents on their caller-id approach. So if they've created a combined approach, the combined approach has all the patent concerns of Microsoft's original approach.
So what's the story on the patent claims? Boycott Email caller id still seems wary, and I see no evidence that Eben Moglen's concerns (such as incompatibility with the GPL) have been addressed.
Any such patent application is likely to be granted, since Microsoft has lots of $$$ to press their case and the patent office has neither the knowledge or time to determine if they're obvious or in any other way counter them.
I remember the joys of dealing with GIF patents. We're better off without this combined approach if the patent applications will make it unworkable.
So, what's the situation?

Until the patent issues are clarified
Boycott Caller-ID for E-mail is still wary of the new, combined scheme. Neither Meng nor Microsoft has clarified whether the draconian patent schemes from Microsoft's earlier attempt still exist!
We need to pressure the people coming up with the standards to avoid patented schemes at all costs, or assign the patents to a neutral third-party with the mandate of using them defensively. -
Re:Boycott of Microsoft's Caller ID for E-mail
Since the parent of my last comment was rated as a troll (I don't agree with that) here is the text:
---
Make sure you let them know that patents on email technology are unacceptable. Merging is okay, let's just keep the SPF license, not the Microsoft one.
---
It's just saying that patents on email tech are unreasonable. That's pretty reasonable to me. -

That's "boycott-email-caller-id.org"
The post above has the wrong URL. The site that describes the patent issues with caller id for email is actually boycott-email-caller-id.org.
It has a brief mention of domainkeys as well. -
Re:Patent Licensing
Good info.. However it mihgt be nice to post the actual address without the misspellings. boycott caller id for email site.

CallerID for email boycottThe concerns presented by the boycott of Microsoft's Caller ID still haven't been addressed by Microsoft. It's still patent-encumbered, still far too verbose and still not used by anyone besides Microsoft and Amazon.
Stick to SPF, give DomainKeys a try once someone actually publishes some info about it. Skip caller ID.

Boycott of Microsoft's Caller ID for E-mail
There's a boycott occurring for Microsoft's Caller ID for E-mail. They're asking for anyone developing a mail client, spam filter or mail transport agent to use a more open protocol, rather than a patented one.

Boycott of Microsoft caller ID for emailI mentioned this earlier (my other comment), but it seems like something that hasn't got much attention on Slashdot. There's a group (?) of people boycotting the Microsoft email caller ID solution and hoping to get authors and MTA's and email clients to sign on:
The page is at http://boycott-email-caller-id.org/ if you're interested.

Current boycott of Microsoft email caller ID!
A related note- the current Microsoft anti-spam solution, Email Caller ID is currently being boycotted.
